But they aren't random, there are multiple levels of community input taken on both a hyperlocal and local level before the city government makes the actual decision. Are you saying that members of the affected community should not be permitted to voice their *opinions* to elected officials? That representative democracy is bad and that those who control the most capital should have unchecked authority not only to set policy but to tell people what they're allowed to say in public? I believe that projects and zoning amendments are pushed off by a loud minority that does not represent a proper democratic system and this is the main reason it's so hard and so expensive to build anything, i bet a lot more projects would get done if it was just "poll the entire neighborhood" instead of "hold a meeting and let annoying idiots scream about their neighborhood being ruined by townhomes"

I live in a city of 400k, there is still townhome discourse within 1km of the core downtown because people think it's reasonable to have huge swaths of SFH within city limits when rents are skyrocketing, so even townhomes are seen as "destroying neighborhood character". this also even happens in cities of more than 1 million in the US and canada with huge areas of low density.

They often do. The problem is that NIMBYs are only what they are in the eye of the beholder, so if it's "something I want but they don't" it's "NIMBYs" but if it's "something I don't want and neither do they" it's "grassroots opposition".

I mean, yeah I only use the term when people are being unreasonable, if a city needs a light rail line and it might get rid of a few homes, then I don't think that's a big deal if the people are compensated. highways just don't add the same value and a light rail stop is way more valuable than an interchange near you.

In yurop, there is public transit, and the ratio of whites vs sandniggers and regular niggers is high (still mostly white). Therefore public transit is reasonably safe to use provided you have at least one weapon (knife or gas spray) and some proficiency of martial arts on you.
