Got this one on accident wrongly thinking I've lost my heavy chain lock when instead I've just left it behind a bike rack after chatting with someone. Best mistake of my life. Cringe name although I do carry a messenger bag and it fits trough the loop on the side of it and looks very cool when worn.

The only acceptable option for a shop trip. Anything longer than 15 mins and I add the kryptonite fahgettaboudit too. Even then, never leave a bike over 1k more than an hour anywhere.

high trust society member here, I noticed that the chain locks are pretty useless against serious attacks, but they save you a lot of money when you're bike gets pulled because you're parking more than 24h at the designated parking spot. in that case the employees of the city are true gentlemen and only cut the first link of your chain so you an keep using it. if you use a cable or a shackle your lock is gone.

I've decoded a couple of 4-digit number locks but it took days. cutting them would have been way quicker but I wasn't stealing anything, I just found some locks and I wanted to use them but they were locked when I found them

I imported one of these frame locks with a heavy chain from Europe. It’s reasonably secure-ish and couldn’t be any more convenient. For a long ride up the valley with a stop at a cafe it’s plenty enough by itself. For a grocery run I wrap the chain around my waist and lock it to the rack too. Not quite secure as a good U-lock but security is not the only thing to be optimized here. You can’t get them in America, no idea why.

While touring your bike and gear should always stay within your line of sight and in the room with you if possible. Lock weight is just not worth it IMO. I just carry two z lok zipties just for leaving the bike outside of a shop or to take a nap on a bench.

I wouldn't even consider it unless I ride with someone else who could watch the bikes or I got permission to put the bike inside. You could try your luck. It's either your bike inside or no customer, and they mostly know this without you telling them that. I would guess they would be more reluctant in a grocery store, hygiene and all.

Also consider the shop. Does it have cameras where you could lock it? Is it connected to many streets where the thief could go or is it in some drive-in outskirt? Maybe If those two added up and I was light enough on the gear I would lock it with those zips and some other lightweight lock and put the gear in a shopping cart.

16mm thick links should be enough to protect you from even the long 42 inch croppers, just make sure you pair them with a good padlock like an Abloy or somethign with a nice thick shackle or one that is enclosed so you can prevent it being exposed at all if you have the right length chain links. Not all chains are equal, case hardening is good and if it's advertised as a security chain it should be better than if its just called chain. Beyond that just be careful you're locking to something that's not going to be weaker than your lock, ideally lock up next to a more expensive bike, or make your own bike look shit, wrap some scuffed up duct tape around the frame or something

Okay, maybe I'm thinking a bit too light since my touring is probably your bikepacking. But I can't see a good reason to leave your bike out of sight for more than 5 minutes AND carry a lock resistant to tools that opportunists don't carry on themselves.
Bike thieves usually scout the bike out for at least 15 minutes before taking out anything bigger than snips. Just letting yourself be present around the bike by glancing at it every minute or so is enough to deter anyone sane.

In normal, non-shit tier countries, I've locked mine, and left. No one touched it. I was gone maybe 15-20 minutes.

But what about less nice countries? I am worried for instance leaving my bike out where there are certain culturally-enriched areas. I'm thinking that a cable and u-lock would do the trick for several reasons; cable can go around panniers and a fixed object. U-lock for complete bicycle immobilisation.

As you say, anyone can cut through, but I can sum it up as such:

time left outside multiplied by the skill of a thief can be divided by lock quality and safety of an area.

The "skill" can be regarded as someone with the know how, tools and will to steal your bike. I know it's a bullshit formula, but you get my point. The longer it's out, in a shit area, the more likely a skilled thief will try his chances. Bikes don't spontaneously disappear, good thieves steal from places they regularly see good bikes. Shit thieves are opportunistic. The latter is completely deterred when there is a decent lock present.

Well it's obvious cities usually contain:

1) interesting spots to visit, after I'm a bicycle tourist
2) specialist bike shops if parts are needed
3) good meeting spots if friends/family decide to stop by
4) plenty of accommodation to choose from.

90% of my tour will be outside of cities, so yes, the U-lock seems retarded. But if I'm in a city I'm not familiar with, then it would be foolish to never do any of the above because I'm afraid some gypsy is going to flee with my panniers.

Here is another proposition, what about using a frame lock in combination with steel cable?

I learned that even if your bike doesn't have bosses, you can use adapters to mount them.

Seems like a good compromise between effectiveness and size/weight.

You can never plan where you'll end up. Even a fine city might have some scum walking and seeing your bike as an opportune target.

So it's impossible to decide what is an isn't a shithole. If you mean obvious ones, then yes, it goes without saying, but even in nice cities there is trouble around the corner.

well yes anon I'm aware I can't literally predict the future
but what I can do is plan the shit out of my trip. if I really want to go to a place where I'm certain I won't be able to take my bike with me, I'll start looking for solutions way before I'm there. maybe there's a supermarket with lockers to store my panniers, maybe there's a subway station with bike parking, maybe the place itself has a room to store bikes in. hell maybe there's a forest nearby where I can just hide my shit. maybe the security guard will keep an eye on it for me.
and if that doesn't work, then I'll just go somewhere else. if I'm worried about my bike/stuff then it's just not worth it. I won't lug around 2kg of steel just for those rare instances.

So it's evident there is a big difference in our cycling setups. I'll be going for a more dorky bike touring setup, which means I'll have bags on every possible mount - so a 2kg bike lock won't make much of a difference.

I'm not being contrarian on purpose, I just think if you're trying to optimise weight, then sure, a 2kg lock is a bit weird to have on a lighter setup.

That being said, I won't go overboard with extra tires, spokes, tools, solar panels either.

I suck shit for a living, in nomex coveralls with literally blue collars. There’s nobody more blue collar than me and I’m rolling around on a $2,500 bike every day. Bought it a decade ago mind, it’s certainly paid for itself a few times since then, but folks of modest means can still have nice things if we’re careful about it.
Here’s how I’m being careful right now: not a maximum security setup but convenience is also a factor. I might back that up with a U-lock if it’s sketch but that’s rare. Weird how difficult those good frame locks are to find, normal bike stores just don’t carry them. I Like those Pinhead keyed nuts too; not impregnable by any means but another level of pain-in-the-ass when choosing a target, without much extra weight or hassle.

I was being indecisive about whether to get a light frame lock such as: >>1887243

But I've decided to stick with my ABUS Granit 470. A big u-lock, but surprisingly weighs only 1.3 kg.
Seems to be far more versatile, and more so when pairting with a 1.2 m steel cable.

You are 100% correct, frame locks are practically invisible on the bike.

So I'm testing different locations, the seat/down/top tube are out simply because of water bottles and other stuff in the way.

The seat stay is one option, but I'm also thinking of fashioning a seat mount somehow, pic related.

The idea then is to have the top security from a u-lock in combination with a steel cable for immobilising my bike and panniers. I've got a set of ortleib steel cables that are attached to my rear panniers which will be locked together with the u-lock.

Pic related is what I use. It's primarily designed for motorcycles but it's not that heavy and quite small. Whilst it's probably not the most secure lock out there I doubt most thieves have seen one so won't know its vulnerabilities. I saw one guy on youtube break it open but it was in a vice and so I think this is a fairly secure lock.

I have a theft strategy, I remove the seatpost each week and put a sausage in there.
At the end of the week i remove the sausage and hide it in the city. Then go out with my dog and she finds it and gets to eat it.

At the moment she can track the sausage in a 10km radius.

We should be able to find my bike if it ever gets stolen.
