It's still a remarkably successful, useful and on balance, good public transit system. It only sucks compared to places outside the US.

It has too many stations too close together. Why does the 1 have three stops between Penn and 14th when one would be enough? Why are Beverley and Cortelyou Roads on the Q not one station, just to name two examples. A subway is supposed to be a rapid transit line transporting passengers across the city QUICKLY, there is no civil right to only having to walk 5 minutes to the next subway station.
There would hardly be a need of seperate local and express services if the local trains didn't stop every quarter mile, especially when there are shared tracks between them like on the J/Z and M between Lower Manhattan and Myrtle Avenue, or the A/C between WTC and downtown Brooklyn, or the 7 local and express, or the 6 local and express.

Interlining like they do in Tokyo and Osaka is fantastic. Interlining obviously has a probability of making reliability worse, but it's not the problem here.

Just that NY are a bunch of a inept fucks. The MTA needs to fire all the top management, hire a bunch of people from European or Asia cities (or even South America. Literally anywhere with functional transit i.e., everywhere except North America) to run it.

Coming from Switzerland and having lived in East Asia. My first impression was that it was dark and dingy as fuck.

First memory of NY was the elevator I took down to the subway smelling like stale piss. Then the rats all over the train tracks.

The fact that it's the best the US has to offer is absolutely shameful. Richest country in the world, yet gets beaten by poor ass Mexicans, Spaniards, Italians etc..

It sucks because it's the USA. The system is extremely old while also not getting sufficient upgrades. They could turn it into a shining jewel of public transit but because it's the USA that'll never happen due to the fiscal conservative philosophy everyone has.

The MTA is famously a money pit, and unless it is cleaned out from top to bottom, it will continue to suck ass.

Plus which, I could handle the dark stations, squealing wheels, and low ceilings; but the bums pissing/shitting up the elevators, getting high on God knows what, screaming and flailing around, panhandling, it all adds up to an unpleasant experience.

If you kick the undesirables off the subway, it instantly gets much better. But then it would be empty.

First of all old metros such as in London, Paris, or some of the old Asian lines such as the Ginza line and Midosuji line are actually good, despite being very old.

All these cities manage to provide excellent metros despite running on old lines, and they are A LOT MORE fiscally conservative than New York. America is just absolutely terrible at public works and construction projects. So much bullshit redtape and scam-like contractors. They are just inept, it's not a money problem, it's discipline, stupidity, lack of experience, arrogance, security theater, and stubborness combined.
