Old Michigan Central depot in Ann Arbor, MI. A classic example of “Railroad Romanesque” architecture, with rustic heavy masonry and half-round arches. It’s now a fancy restaurant and trains stop next door at the Amshack, a building with all the charm of a highway rest stop bathroom.

I can see this station from my living room window. I recall reading somewhere that it's either one of the oldest operating train stations in Australia or the station with the oldest extant station buildings (even though the building hasn't been used in years). It was built in 1856, which is kind of impressive when you consider that the colony was only just 20 years old at the time. From a whole bunch of nothing to a functioning civilization with railways in just two decades, really activates the almonds.

Spanish colonial style depots in the southwest are cool. Weirdly, the O & W in upstate New York had a couple of “Catskills Mission” style stations.

SOVL. It reminded me of Amsterdam Centraal, but smaller. Basically goes for all of Haarlem. Shame most newer stations here are concrete and steel monstrosities.

Definitely. Unfortunately like 90% of small town Midwest stations, it is no longer used as a train platform. Instead they house things like local chambers of commerce, banks, law offices, bars, insurance or real estate offices, etc. Any business you can expect in a small town downtown, that's what small town train stations have become.

Detroit had three major stations at one time. Picrel is the Grand Trunk’s Brush St. station, located about where the Renaissance Center is today. There was also the Fort Street terminal, used by several different railroads. The Michigan Central depot was always kind of a white elephant, built with the assumption that the center of urban development would be drawn to it when it moved up Woodward instead. A lot of that office space was never filled and the surrounding area stayed working class residential. It’s nice to see it preserved though and what Ford did is better that earlier plans for a jail or casino. Too bad it’s not a train station and Detroit has such shit Amtrak, with no link to Canada or trains to the east via Toledo.

I hope they remodel the current Milwaukee station and redo it into something a little more classical. At this point the Intermodal station is nearing the age that Everett and Lakefront Depots were when they were torn down. She's ready for an update, I'd say.
