I love railways that are built as roadside trams. We have a bunch of them in Switzerland.

This is the Frauenfeld-Wil railway.

This is the Forchbahn, which runs from Zurich to Esslingen via Forch. In Zurich it runs onto the tram tracks.

Contrary to the two inter-urban trams posted until now, the Seetalbahn is a normal-grade train partially running along the road and being a menace to road traffic.

A more peaceful variant is the narrow-grade Bernina railway in the Italian part, running along and on the road to Tirano.

There's really no difference, other than rail gauge. Seetalbahn is essentially built as a roadside tram line.

The so-called Bremgarten Railway runs from Dietikon (a suburb of Zurich) to Wohlen via Bremgarten. It's built as a roadside tram with street running sections until Bremgarten, from there to Wohlen it runs on a former standard gauge line.

This is the St. Gallen - Trogen railway. It's now part of a larger meter-gauge network in the region, which resulted from the fusion of different lines and companies. But this is the only line that's built as a proper roadside tram, save for a few stretches on other lines (like Appenzell-Wasserauen)

The difference is that the Seetalbahn sometimes has "normal" SBB gear running, which surprises people because they're used to tram-like trains.
The "war paint" on the control car is exactly because of that.

Back in 2000 I was visiting Romania. In Arad (near the Hungarian border) they had this interurban line, where trams left tha city limits and drove along the road to some closed chemical plant and further to a small village of Ghioroc. Just checked the street view on G maps, the line is still there but looks pretty dilapidated...

It seems too close to the road to don't have any protections. what if a pedestrian or (motor)cyclist falls on the railway while a train is approaching?

Also the Stubaitalbahn ("Stubai valley rail") in Austria which administratively functions as Line STB of the Innsbruck tram network and which I've personally ridden down from the valley into the city on vacation a couple years ago. Took over an hour for like 18 kilometers but incredibly scenic.

They only got connected very recently through the Limmattalbahn, but I never thought of that until you just mentioned it and that's pretty amazing.
Only three operators tho, FB, VBZ and AVA.
