thanks Anon. this is giving me good memories. i was subscribing to bicycling magazine back in those days. i bought an aluminum bonded trek 7000, in whatever year it came with the radass purple-green front to back fade paint around that time. still have it. when the STX-RC drivetrain on it finally kicked the bucket and decent 7spd parts became too difficult to find cheaply, i converted it to a single speed with an eccentric flip/flop (fix/free) rear hub. it's still a blast. the elastomers in the old manitou fork i put on it are completely shot and stiffened, but it just looks so cool i leave it on. i don't need the suspension anyways.

Those are not old bikes. They were the brand new thing at the time you would salivate over but could only afford a steel pipe knockoff and ride and love it to death.
I knew I did, mine gave out when the frame material softened at the dropout and the wheel couldn't be tightened anymore, a single pedal stroke would pull it out of alignment.
Couldn't afford a new bike for 10 years after that and it was a fucking hybrid.
Man, these magazine pages take me way back. Good stuff.

I did this sometimes, it reduced brake squeal but would make the trailing edge of the pad wear out more quickly
my theory was that brake squeal is made worse by uneven pad contact
and that toe in must be tuned to how far the pad post and brake arm bushing flex

It's for downhill, you don't shift much and grip shifters take a lot of beating. Also front brakes need to be less strong to prevent going above the bar on the steep rocky parts.

Just fyi, ive only skimmed through the magazines in the right for all the pics sent so far, left is still unchecked

I have a scanner but connected to my mates computer on another floor, its so much more work than just taking a pic, but I'll look for some cheap scanners maybe
