Seeing roads remain congested after adding a lane and concluding that it must be "induced demand" and the solution is to not build new lanes is the most retarded thing I've ever heard.
Imagine some contractor is building houses, sees that they all get bought and occupied instantly, and decides "we need to build LESS housing lest we induce demand and end up coating the whole country in houses". All that leads to is some people not having access to housing because some fucking moron thought there was infinite potential homeowners out there.
You're seeing "induced demand" on new lanes because you STILL don't have enough lanes. An infinitely wide highway won't summon a fucking infinite number of cars to cause traffic. If you upgrade a 3-lane road to 4 lanes and it's still crowded, that just means you need a 5th or 6th lane, not to tear down the 4th lane. There's a finite amount of people that want to go in any given direction at any time, and if you build enough lanes to accommodate that number of people, there won't be traffic.
You can argue that bikes, trams, ect. are better for urban travel, and I'd agree on most of it, but arguing that the solution to intercity traffic is to intentionally *not* expand the highway system is just ridiculous.
