That's such bullshit. If you have people in your local market buying boutique parts, it's fantastic for you and anyone else who likes old bikes. Those things will last for ages, and revolve on the used market for reasonable prices.
Good 26" tires wouldn't even exist if there weren't enough people buying them.
Where do you think the really nice old parts/bikes from the 90s even came from? Stumpies were gentrified from day 1. Budget-conscious 'sensible' riders certainly weren't buying them.
And entry/mid-range old stuff like hardrocks and STX doesn't have much appeal to pretentious posers, and so it doesn't have an inflated value.

I suspect you aren't even clued into a local market or any sensible way of buying stuff, and just want to use ebay or something else detached and consoomer easy.

Gone through many cheap and mid tier ones. I just enjoy first hand experiencing the differences in designs and materials. Currently rocking picrel. Its so-so ... the panniers are good but not very quick to release. The top bags ease and speed of attachement makes up for it. The top bag has plenty of space and acessibility, has shoulder straps if you want it to turn backpack. Material is more than decently waterproof, even the zippers.
My current suspicion is that the weak point in this set is a detail in its construction. Straps like the shoulder straps and the top handle are sewn in with seams in one pas. This is asking for trouble and tearing out, im literally waiting for it. On many products you'll find a construction that is doubled, with an extra patch that is 'welded' or glued on at high tension interfaces to provide needed strain relief.

The best 26" tires were developed in the 90s and have been made ever since. Also, dirt jumpers and their tires existed pre-covid boom.
I've been biking long enough to tell you that before these fags came along there was a solid two decades where you could get a second hand 90s mtbs and parts for pennies. They were a dime a dozen. Whether it be online, or through local markets, you can't find anything that isn't egregiously overpriced because fat noriding larpers watched an old shovel video on YouTube and hopped on a bandwagon.

oh come on now. If you're actually mtbing then tubeless is a huge improvement. Modern Racekangz Crosskangz etc are better than anything before.
If not then things like billy bonkers or DTH or kojaks or meme panaracer variants liek Rene Herse are better.
And the 'touring' tires like big apple and Marathons have gotten better too.

Road tires are the same. Tires are just something that has vastly improved. Even re-issues like smoke/dart and fire XC pro are fucking sluggish. They just look cool. You're really showing yourself as an autistic historical larping fashionista by hyping vintage tires of all things.

That hasn't been my experience. In NZ it's thoroughly a buyers market, everything is undervalued, with the 1 exception being some actual vintage/classic high end stuff. It's easy to get a decent project for under $100 and you probably won't recoup the cost of consumables if you restore it. I've browsed lots of people's craigslists in the US to give recs over the years and most places there too seem to have pretty good markets.
Post yours, i'm curious what you're even talking about.

'Cleaning up' welds as often seen on bikes makes for an inferior, weaker, weld and is generally discouraged in serious welding. The later of course depends on the job at hand and its requirements. I agree that the welds in picrel could be cleaner but I am sure they have good penetration and are structurally more sound than many of those ground out welds you see left and right.

I'm thinking that just going for an OEM removable basket solution is the way to go. Racktime actually sells the mounting adapter and lets you slap it on whatever you want to attach to a rack of theirs, just attach the zip ties to this little baby. Like 25-30€ shipped on ebay.

Just got one of the cheap REI ones. Purchases of socks and fuel canisters made it basically free with the discount. Revolutionized my drunk biking experience. I'll probably spring for a nicer one since the external pocket is kinda meh.

Also going to pick up a bolt on top tube bag in the 1-1.5L range. Trying to spend a couple days on the road in the spring. I think the plan is a slim rear rack for one bag and a dry bag tied to a handlebar extender for the front. Should be plenty for a warm weekender plus.
