I just am sick of car commuting and its stupid. I also don't like huge roads where people are flying around at a million miles per hour. I also hate how fucking unbelievably hot it is all summer with these parking lots and eight lane roads.

But I like car ownership and I think its useful.

So Idk maybe just put the parking lots in the back so things look a little better, make it easy to get to/from work without driving and reorganize road infrastructure with one-ways and semi-permeable surfaces so its less openly hostile to anyone not in an air conditioned box

seems reasonable which is why it'll never happen

I live in a comfy town. I can walk to the store in less then 15 minutes. But I prefer to use may bike because it means I can go there and are back in 15 minutes. And I can do this safely, only need to cross one mayor road with traffic.

Again, I've got a Class A, I can drive literally anything.
My best winter was the winter when I didn't actually need my car, because my bike and public transport were plenty, and I didn't have to worry about finding a spot, shovling out, or driving safely in the snow. It as awesome!
I could have dug it out at any time at my leisure, but the fun thing was I didn't *need* to.
You're all riled up about someone saying a need should be a want, and that's all.

Like I'm literally a mechanic, dude, you have no idea to which my autistic love of cars reaches. I look for cars like the elderly birdwatch, all I'm saying is that it's a choice, and it's supposed to be a free country.

I don't make payments on my car and it still costs me between four and five thousand dollars a year for gas, insurance, prevantative maintenance, tolls and all the associated government bullshit just to register and park the fucking thing.

I'd really rather not spend that if I could. its a massive drain with a huge upfront cost. If I had to spend that money on something I would rather use it on a trip or squirrel it away for one of my home improvement project ideas.

And it's not softhands looking for Sunday funtimes. I remember being a young person starting my career, 16-18, and quite often being denied further employment talks because I had a state ID and no drivers license
(Got it at 16, didn't feel safe, turned it in until I was an adult)

Might mean ya pay for parking or have to deal with others interacting in the world, but like, this really just makes ya look immature, bud. There are others in the world and they all deserve to function.
A car is supposed to be a choice.

Honestly, I've become a lot more of a bike advocate over the years just because while I love the trains and I do think it is necessary to have that big transit connector, when I walk or ride around the city I feel better about living here. Driving on all the overly large streets and roads often makes the city feel like an ugly pain in the ass, although the most aesthetically pleasing urban areas to drive are probably some of the stretches of freeway closer to downtown when you can actually go full speed. No doubt, listening to music and passing by the tall buildings on a sunny day or late at night is a great experience. But 90% of the time it just isn't like that, I'm not enjoying myself because I'm trying to get to work or home and it's rush hour.

But riding on city streets is almost never fun because half the time the quality of the streets is so degraded I can feel like I'm driving through Jurassic Park with how many bumps and random dips there are, and they're often designed so that trees are pushed back or removed to avoid drivers crashing into them, so the whole view is just flattened asphalt and thin strips of grass. It's fucking miserable.

But when I walk or bike I'm usually taking side streets to avoid traffic, the streets that are more inconvenient for cars, and suddenly I feel good. There are trees giving shade, I see other people out with their kids and their dogs, I see people cooking food on patios, there are cats just laying on the sidewalk being fat. I feel like I actually want to be outside, I feel like I don't want to look at my phone or distract myself. People actually talk to me sometimes, like somebody asked me if I could help them lift a piece of furniture out their door and gave me a beer in return. When I drive everywhere it feels like all I see is conflict, so it's relaxing when random people just say good morning from their patio or compliment my bike or something.

Man I am honestly surprised I had the self reflection at 16 to know I didn't feel safe on the road. I almost can't blame others for not doing the same thing, because we are such a car-centric country, but man, I'm powering a murder machine at 80mph, I better feel comfortable.

Agreed, which is why I was so pissed it was required to work at a fucking curtain store when I was 17. Bike and bus aren't reliable transport despite living in a one mile square town on the east coast

No, I'm from NJ and it blows my mind how quickly you end up in areas with no sidewalks. First of all, it was my first time seeing cows and shit up close and those refrigerators of an animals are spooky up close, and two , just like, where am I supposed to go? Everyone so mad I'm not on the sidewalk and the sidewalk isn't there.
You want to see what the US is like, drive a semi truck, throw your bike in the back, then try to buy groceries of any sort while the truck is parked. Let me know if you make it out alive and not harassed

Cars are still a leading cause of death and injury among all ages, including kids, and it doesn't have to be that way. A woman walking her dog in a crosswalk got hit right outside my apartment a couple of years ago, she was alive but her body was contorted in a weird way and she clearly couldn't walk. She was delirious and just crying for her dog that had run away in fear, she thought it had been killed. The fact people just kind of accept those deaths for the concept that it is more convenient seems like an anti-social and uncivilized consequence of the idea that car dependence is necessary. It really does feel like we treat people like animals, I still remember seeing that woman in the street and thinking about how she didn't look much different than a deer jerking around after being hit by a truck. And all she was doing was trying to walk her dog. It's just sad.
