This whole talk about profit and taxes is a complete non sequitur when you consider that all the modes of transport you ALREADY use are subsidized to hell and back, but it's only a problem when it would be (you) covering someone else's bill instead of the tenfold other way around.
The government acts in it's own interest by funding roads, airlines and rail lines out of their taxpayers pocket. That way you can externalize the "profit", say, roads generate because you're not insulating them in a bubble where they have to cover their own cost regardless of how much revenue they "generate" externally.
