Pic related. In the 20th century, England ran giant hovercraft between Pegwall Bay in Kent to Calais, France. It was a pretty useless and novel way to travel even when it started in the 1960s because you could fly to Continental Europe just as easily but it would have been a more fun way to travel.

In the early 70s France tested out guided hovercraft as an alternative to high speed rail. Then the 1973 oil crisis happened.

this is a monorack, a mini cog monorail mainly used in the European Alps. It's used to transport both people and goods and is popular in mountain vineyards.

I don't think it was useless, it was the fastest way across the channel before the tunnel was built, and I presume air travel from the UK to Europe wasn't as cheap as it is now.

Brighton & Rottingdean Seashore Electric Railway.
Basically a tram with underwater rails, visible only at low tide.
Was legally a ship so was required to have a lifeboat, a flag, and had a crew that was technically sailors under a captain's command.

I've only ever seen these things in cartoons... whats the point? Why not just walk? I guess you could carry slightly more cargo than you could on foot, or tow something small, but there's really not much room on the thing, and any extra weight you add will make it even more exhausting to use.

Because you might not be able to walk everywhere easily, e.g. on bridges or in tunnels.
You'll also get the benefit of rolling downhill with zero effort.

they were 99% of the time used for track maintenance, you can carry your tools with you, test the track and be able to flip it off if a train is coming.

They were mostly maintenance crews. Or for staff who would have to manually operate gates, switches and signaling equipment. Much easier for someone to just ride around on one of those than to walk or use a horse.

I can’t think of a source but there’s stuff out there, both old wheel sets rusting away and new kits for rail bikes and such. This kind of thing is common with abandoned lines in third world countries
