I ride the bus sometimes and I would estimate that 2/3 of the riders pay with cash.

My city made NFC card fare cheaper and cash fare more expensive (they pushed all of the cost of handling cash to cash users), and about 80% of passengers switched to card overnight. Card machine later started taking NFC debit and credit also, and there are like zero cash payers.

I'm convinced many people specifically do it in the hope they just get waved through for free to speed up the line. Seems to happen 3/4 the time.

They most certainly are not. Screenshot the QR codes, send them to everyone in your group chat, and you just solved the 'i bought four tickets but they're linked to my one account, what do' problem, without resorting to insane shit like handing your phone back over a ticket barrier

QR codes work well if there's no time pressure, boarding a bus however is time critical.

There shouldn't be a fucking delay because there should be a bus conductor, whose job it is to issue tickets while the bus is already moving. So much of modern life being fucked over in one's day-to-day life by companies finding new and interesting ways to not hire anybody. Also see: self-service checkouts.

Paying by coins makes you anonymous. Coins might have your DNA but you cannot tell by the shape or the grease on the dime who rode the bus or train.

I was a tourist visiting Montreal with my bike. In the GTA, I can bike out of the city in a given direction, and then take the commuter rail back around sunset. GO Transit will just figure out the fare based on tap-on and tap-off.

In Israel you literally can't pay with cash anymore. You either get a public transit personal card, or use one of several apps. Both options cover all bus companies and trains. The card is annoying for buses because you have to pick a range on a small screen near the driver and it always malfunctions. With the apps you just use a QR code on the door or some windows. The driver doesn't even check, there are occasional fare checkers who use scanners.

I pay in cash for the bus because Nigger Jersey has a retarded app with a confusing route system with 10000 options that you're supposed to pick from with different prices if you use multiple routes and show the driver. Just have a card I can buy that simply lets me USE THE BUS and I and almost everyone else won't hold things up by paying with cash.

It's a curse of development. A new system becomes harder to implement if it makes all the stuff you already have obsolete. Then you have to implement everything in one go, I don't think Americans didn't get contactless payments until they were implemented in mobile phones.
A third world country is on the other end of the spectrum, they can implement the newest tech in an instance and slowly role it out to their least developed places without fear of locking out large parts of their countries.
