I saw a woman try to hope the turnstile at suburban station in philly. She fucked up spectacularly and did a flip and landed on her ass on the wrong side of the gate and had to pay normally after embarrassing herself. Gates can be defeated easily, the majority of fare evaders use things like emergency exits, elevators, or just slipping in behind a paying rider. The only way to really combat fare evasion is enforcement, with jail time and massive fines for the scum instead of a minor fine that's never actually enforced.

It's mostly to do with the fact that literally no one except fare evaders actually rides transit in 95% of the country, so there's hardly any money made on fares at all. Why bother in a place where car infrastructure is far faster and more convenient. Public transport still gets a set amount of funding though and they have to spend it on something, and stopping fare evasion is a good way to pretend to be busy with something.

Not true at all. Places have already turned to warzones while having an active police force. I bet cops would love spending their whole day dealing with easy 'regulars', people who have 30 crimes on their rapsheet but just keep getting let out because they're not stealing from the cops. Get rid of the cops and the people getting stolen from for the 20th time with no recourse will finally be able to take care of the problem.

Look at California where it became law to allow theft up to certain amounts. If you were a business owner and wanted to hire a private goon to patrol your store and thump people actively trying to steal they'd get locked up quicker than they could get a bathroom break. I used to think cops were useful but they're really not outside of keeping traffic moving.

21 years of hopping bart, only got caught once a year ago. i have a hunch which stations have cops and which dont. so i usually pay about 1/3 of the time. for a while i lived by a ghetto station and at least half the times i paid,, there was a cop at the exit.... i still pay sometimes but havent seen cops at any exits for a while. the station i live by is super easy to sneak out of, i almost nevrer pay now :)

honestly, its easier and cheaper to drive, so fuck them.

Poor public transport infrastructure is only one part of the problem in American cities, other ones are massive amounts of crime and gang violence, not to mention a large homeless/drug addict population often with mental health problems.

All of this obviously means that many people would rather sit in their own "safe" and private car than use public transport and from what I've seen from many cities American cities I can't really blame them as a non-American.

The true economic impact of crime greatly exceeds the value of the property that was damaged. It manifests as companies refusing to invest in that community because of the crime, creating "food deserts", dearth of job opportunities, etc.

My issue with this is my city has been allowing our bus and train to become mobile hobo shelters without limit. Every time I go on someone is holding a lighter under aluminum foil or shoving a needle in their arm. Why the fuck would I pay for that experience? Now we're going to enter an awkward period where they want their fares paid but I'm still resentful from the enriching diversity experience. This is why I fareskip. I lost a job because I was so traumatized from nearly being assaulted on my way to work that I couldn't force myself onto the bus again for a while. Where is my fucking compensation for that?
