Indifferent. The biggest threats to my safety BY FAR are garbage trucks and box trucks that are just below the legal limit for requiring a CDL. Second biggest threat is those shitheads on mopeds who go the wrong way around corners and jump off curbs against the light, and maybe just generally people who fling their doors open in the middle of the road without warning.

SUVs are tacky and often unnecessary but the amount of pearl clutching over them is out of proportion to the safety threat they pose to me, I suspect this is just a copy/paste conflict from motorists who drive smaller motor vehicles and are thinking about highway safety in a high speed collision, aka an issue that is totally irrelevant to me. Just goes to show you that yimby "urbanists" and bike lane karens have no idea what it's like to ride a bike and are just looking for ways to sound like they care because it's part of the kewl flex #carfree lifestyle brand they wear like a carhartt workwear shirt on a WFH fintech brogrammer.

These "light trucks" are the literal bane of my existence. I can't count the number of times that an idiot has almost ran me over because they forget that people exist outside of cars. They need to have them confiscated and replaced with picrel.

Yeah same, closest brush with death I've had in years was a box truck that looked parked and then did this crazy swerve maneuver into my lane as I was passing it. When they're empty they have the maneuverability of a german sports sedan and the visibility of a WW2-era russian tank. At least SUVs generally have a fuck ton of cameras all over the exterior.

I think the meme about SUVs being the biggest threat to cyclists came from the "war on cars" podcast which is run by a bunch of rich white cunts from brooklyn who ACTUALLY HAVE CARS while having the temerity to pose as the official spokespeople for the bicycle riding car-free crowd, this is why I no longer participate in the "urbanism" subculture, it's hypocritical like you wouldn't believe, an absolute cancer.

Box trucks and vans usually have great visibility though. They've got huge mirrors and they're cubes so it's easy to figure out where everything is. Yes they have a couple blind spots but as long as you're not in the well known blind spots they should see you. The problem is that we give licenses to fucking monkeys because apparently driving a car is a human right. And you need to go into fuckhuge trucks to need extra licensing. So you have people who shouldn't even be driving at all driving a rented UHaul and they don't know how to look out of the windows and use their mirrors.

You don't. The sad reality of traffic is that you can not rely on others following the rules and watching out for you. Watch out for yourself, assume the murdercages operator has not and will not see you and if they do they have intent to or at least are indifferent about killing you.
It helps to have great enough relative speed, so even if they try they can't hit you, because you've passed them before they had an opportunity to hit you using their sluggish and awkward handling weapon of choice. It may seem like a contradiction to people who are new to cycling but it works and keeps you safe.
Regarding pedestrianism: You loose.
The simple fix would be having requirements for the issueing of a drivers license that correlate with the associate dangers and not cater to the perceived 'need' of a large group.
Think about the later: What hoops do you have to jump through in your jurisdiction for a concealed carry permit versus a drivers license and which enables you to do worse damage.
