I aways wondered why the drop nose was done instead of putting a window in the floor like a helicopter. Seems like a very expensive and heavy solution.

The nose cone of an aircraft is filled with a lot of important parts of the aircraft, such as radar equipment and computer systems. Most of it isn't hollow enough to allow for a window of any sort.

Well you say that but whatever space a window would take would surely be far less than a hydraulic nose cone, retractable outer window and mechanical lock system all built to withstand supersonic flight.
