Do ATC radios really sound that bad? Everytime I watch ATC recordings the audio always sounds incomprehensible. It's even worse if they have a thick accent. Do the radios sound clearer when you're in Radar/Tower control?

Not an aircraft man but 2-way radios are always basically unintelligible until you get the knack, and even then hard to understand unless you have them on your favoured volume/wearing earplugs/whatever your routine is.

Not a pilot, but I've been in recreational boats with a radio tuned to guard.
The communications going out from coast guard, or any fixed station really, are loud and clear and heard over long distances.
The communications from other boats are shitty and garbled and sometimes non-existent due to range (i.e. you heard the coast guard side of the conversation only).

Because a ground station can have a much larger and more powerful radio than you can cram into a plane.

As long as it sounds like what they were expecting to hear, it doesn't matter. They're trained professionals, so everyone always knows what the other person intended to say even if it's not perfectly clear.
