How does /n/ feel about freight hopping? Not the culture of crust punks and tweakers that hop the rails, but just taking your own adventure by riding a nice freight train across your province/state/whatever or through a lot of them.
I've done it a few times and it's one of the best ways to travel. It's dangerous as fuck (the trains, not other people though I guess you have to watch for that too) because of the power of trains. But it's one of the nicest ways to get around. You see a place from a point of view you've never seen before, whether it's riding through a desert, mountains, flat plains, valleys. It's a good challenge too, because you have to be able to ration your water, food and know what cars and trains to ride and to where so you go to your destination, rather than get dumped off in some siding 100 kilometers from civilization without you even noticing.
You also have to challenge your self by surviving the noise, shaking, vibrations of the cars. The cold metal against your skin as you try to sleep in the hole on the end of a grainer or on the end of an intermodal car. Or a tent along the side of the tracks if you stop off in some little town to explore and need to wait for the next train out.
Going to link these videos too, anons. It's Brave Dave's Big Fat Freight Hop, a 4 part documentary he shot a long time ago where he travels across Canada from Montréal to Vancouver. It's a fun watch because it has that old shitty YouTube aesthetic due to how long ago it was shot, so no gay music and editing.
