I built my road bike with friction shifters and it is an enormous pain. Each shift takes way more effort and precision. Not only do you have to stop pushing the pedals as hard when shifting, but you also have to listen and feel the chain switch from one gear to the other, all while pushing up climbs and checking for traffic. It's very slow, having raced several times on the bike, I must admit that I would have had a huge advantage had I installed indexed shifters.
This was the stupidest meme I've fallen for. It offers no advantage. If one can use friction shifting he can set up reliable indexing with a fraction of the effort in a fraction of the time.
It would only make sense as a temporary hack if one must use mismatched hardware (which still won't work well).
