I'm a fat fuck and the axle on my rear bicycle wheel keeps breaking. It's expensive to keep replacing the entire wheel, so I want to know if these things are replaceable? I removed the axle and all these little metal balls came rolling out. I can't figure how to get them back in, or how I would get pic related fitted if I purchased it. Any thoughts? Is this something that is actually user serviceable on wallmart-tier bikes?

I'm not a fat fuck (185cm/85,5kg) and i've been bending/breaking those motherfuckers a lot, make sure you are not over thighting them and that you use enough grease. Check for ovalized balls they might fuck up the whole thing. But the real problem is to find a good quality replacement, since is a low end style of wheels it's hard find a non dog shit alternative. Going to a free hub style of wheels is a big deal cause you might have to swap derailer shifter chain and it might don't be with it.

yes, the rear is a 175mm long, 3/8" axle

Chances are the one that you will buy online will have the incorrect size cones and locknuts, I suggest that you reuse the ones that came in your broken axle. As for getting it fitted, you will need a chain whip, a sprocket remover, and some cone wrenches.. if some of the ball bearings went missing just measure one that you managed to collect and get a pack of the same size. I also recently replaced the axles of my bike because the wheels were wobbling and not spinning as smoothly, so I disassembled it and noticed that both axles were bent but the bearing surfaces were still smooth, so I just bought new axles, reassembled it, and the thing is spinning fine now.

if it's a BSO from the last 10 years or so it will almost definitely be a 7 speed freewheel. a 7 speed cassette has always been a thing and it would be a drop in replacement.

OP should go to a shop and buy an upgraded wheel for maybe a hundred bucks. also, breaking axles before snapping spokes makes me think this is an abuse issue, not just about weight - maybe op is driving over curbs and shit.

the last freewheel axle I bought was off scamazon for like $13. just measure the old one with a regular metric ruler and make sure it's compatible with the number of gears on your freewheel and hollow to accept your quick release skewer if your old one used a quick release skewer.

take those ball bearings to a bike shop to get replacements if you lost some, or if their surfaces are not smooth and shiny once you wipe the crud off.
you also need grease (ordinary black is fine) and most likely a cone wrench in millimeters to match the cones (probably 15mm)

im assuming your bike uses a freehweel
id try changing to a cassette wheel purely because they are much less prone to bending / snapping axles due to the bearings on the drive side being mounted further out
