Landfag here. Is there any trick to getting accustomed to water travel, so I don't get sick and feel like drowning myself? I have a question.

These past few months, and after talking a bit with the union guy who's supposed to be hooking me up, I've realized that after hearing so much from so many people, both online and irl that the maritime industry is hurting bad for workers/sailors, it's actually an unspoken and silent reality that it's *only* AB's and above that are in high demand and who are actually being sought out for, not OS's. As far as OS's go, generally speaking, they can get fucked. Yet isn't it necessarily that sailors have to start out as OS's in order to graduate into AB's and officers? So why this attitude and overall market decision then? Why doesn't the industry want to invest in the new higher interest in OS's so they can actually make a career out of maritime, and instead continue to gatekeep for AB's and above only?

I want to invest the rest of my life (or at least a good chunk of it) into maritime, but it's so hard to do that if nobody wants to give me the time of day in favor of those already experienced, who are already in low(er) supply and already more picky about where they work. There can't be AB's if there aren't OS's at some point.

Can anybody help me to make heads or tails of why this is the case? I just want to sail...

On Linkedin? Maybe like 20 or 30+. However, that detracts from my point (or perhaps does further it) as my now current "reliable" point of entry is through the SIU union. Outside of the reliability and looking-out-for-members of a union, there are almost no (legit) companies out to hire actual OS's in private, non-union capacities. And if they are, they are almost always asking for *minimum* 1 or 2 years prior experience - aka not entry level.

Wouldnt recommend RFA. My brother (deckie) almost joined it as a sponsor and he is now very glad that he did not (heard a lot of horror stories from the RFA cadets during his cadetship - poor experience/learning opportunities, bad management, bad career growth etc)
If you have a STEM degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering and are looking at getting into the Engine side, try applying to a few sponsors and ask if they will put you through a shorter course. Some sponsors are now offering grad schemes for that. South Shields Marine School definitley offer shorter engine courses for people with those degrees. I think Fleetwood also offer it.

I was deck with MSC. Got tired of the retardation, reliefs, and injuries so I quit (which I do regret) and they declined to take me back.
Went to American Queen after it was posted here, and whoever said it was a good company - you are a lying faggot. They absolutely earn their 50% turnover rate. It's a perfect crew and boat, but the wages are shit, the accommodation and certain rules are shit, and shoreside is room temp IQ retarded. Their shoreside makes every retard in MSC look like fucking Albert Einstein. Main reason I had to leave.
I'm waiting on a new medical certificate (current about to expire) and have to take VPDSD to join SIU. Its going to take weeks or even months.
I need to get to sea or water NOW before I lose my shit. As a wiper. Maybe watch stander somewhere in deck. Great lakes seems gay and retarded after interviewing for them.
Inland rivers or tugs or deep sea that doesnt need VPDSD - who's hiring and can ship me off now? Anyone know?

The main thing is, if someone's flagrantly ignoring their duties, you gotta talk to them and explain what they're doing wrong. Expectations that SHOULD go without saying often DO require saying when you're dealing with some of the mouthbreathers that work out here. IMO, if you've explained your minimum expectations and they STILL refuse to step up, and you've given them a couple chances, then yeah, they should be gotten rid of. That shit's corrosive to everyone's morale. It's just important to talk to them man to man first. If you're taking that last resort I would just talk to the crew coordinator and be like "I gave that guy plenty of chances but he just refuses to pull his weight, if you can at least put him on a different boat it would help us" or something. That's my take.

Unfortunately, my STEM degree is a science, so no possibility to convert. I'm actually looking forward to the chance to learn engineering though, and I'm financially sustainable for quite a while, so college isnt a big deal. I mainly want to end up somewhere I will actually learn though, I've spent enough of my life doing nothing for years solely in order to get a certificate that pretends I was actually taught something- was bearable when younger and on the piss all the time, fucking hate the idea of it now.

There have been / are hotspots in places like West Africa, Somalia, Indonesia, etc. I know a few guys who worked offshore in Nigeria and they said piracy and kidnapping were real threats, and happened to people they know. I've worked mostly in N. America and have never encountered piracy, although it's nothing terribly unusual for a little panga boat to sail alarmingly close but 99/100 they're just fishing. IIRC there was an tug working in the oilfield off Mexico that got hijacked for a while. If you google "Piracy Mexico" there's an article from a few years ago about numerous incidents in the Bay of Campeche.

How feasible it is to transition from an engie to eto? I feel like I have made (yet another) bad life decision, because I'm finishing my degree in mechanical engineering and during my first real contract I often think that may not be it. I don't mind sailing, but the work done in the engine department seems not worth the money, at least for me. I dedicated 3 years of my life to studying just so I could spend weeks cleaning stuff, taking trash out, handing tools and sometimes assisting with real work. Maybe it gets better once you're promoted from a rating position.

I have an unlimited horsepower, 1600 ton chief engineer license. I probably could get work as a power plant switchboard/control center operator but that would also require some other certifications first. Had a friend who did that for a living who was always trying to get me to join him. I could also work for big tech data centers without any more certs because they have huge backup power systems that use the same engines I work with. But that job is about $80k/yr last I checked.
Guys with actual engineering degrees from the academies have a lot more options.
Deck apes are just screwed.

Fuck, bros, I finally got a my entry level gig. My union guy finally managed to hook me up. It's going to be a coastal tanker (he didn't say what specific type or company, I'll find that out tomorrow), 60 day hitch. They're not requiring a clean MSC physical (which is what disqualified me last month for an international gig), so I'm set to start accumulating sea time. Gotta drive down to the union hall tomorrow to get on the billet and I should be starting no later than this Friday.

God, I can't believe it's finally happening.

Any advice for a first-timer on a tanker? Any advice in general for what I should bring, and do while on board?

Got my laptop with my external drive with thousands of books to draw from (though I probably won't because lol Wi-FI), and I got someone to chat with too. But yeah, I was going to bring some casual clothes along with my work clothes for when I'm off.

Never intended to, and my union guy basically told me the same thing when I poised the same question. Guess some people really don't know...

Anyways, found out today the company is Crowley (specifically the subsidiary Intrepid), and it's a good vessel/company from what I looked up and asked around for. Pretty stoked. Only thing I'm not exactly looking forward to is if we're going to be sailing down through the gulf cuz of that crazy high summer heat. Nothing a sweat rag can't fix, and lots of water, but still, would be nicer if we just hugged along the east coast instead.

60 day minimum hitch, but I'm hoping to bump it to 90 days. Just gotta make sure they like me...

So far, what I have and am trying to fit into my bag(s) is:

>2 pairs of cargo pants + belt
>4 pairs of jeans + belt
>5 or 6 shirts for the week (probably) + a couple of beaters
>6 pairs of underwear + the one I'd be wearing
>4 pairs each of normal socks and working socks (I can use them for two days each, probably)
>1 sweater
>2 sweat rags
>Pair of leather gloves
>Pair of steel toed boots
>Beanie

And that's for clothing alone.

And then I also plan to take my laptop w/ keyboard and mouse and external drive, shampoo/conditioner and body soap, a few razors, lots of sunscreen, personal first aid kit, flashlight w/ extra batteries, knife, toothbrush and toothpaste, wet wipes, my flutes, and a few other miscellaneous things.

Is all of this too much? I feel like it kinda is, but I'm not sure. What do you guys usually bring for a long hitch?

Besides steel toes, I usually bring flip flops and a pair of street shoes (I wear the work boots on travel days) in case I get shore time. Also instead of sunscreen, I wear long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and various neck and face coverings like Mexican landscapers do. Sweatbands. This is just me but I also usually bring a stack of books cause fuck e-readers.

Usually I end up with one large duffel bag and a large backpack. But lately I've also been doing an additional rolling carryon. Who cares? Yeah, "travel light" if you're backpacking Europe on vacation, but you're going to work on a ship for two months... Why not being what you need/want?

I thought about that, but I worry that if I'm in an especially hot place, It's going to put me at quicker risk of overheating and potential sunstroke. Best to have as much airflow as possible, I feel.

Yeah, I'm bringing a small-medium rolling luggage bag for all my clothes, and a medium sized duffel bag for all my other amenities and equipment.

Thanks for the response. I feel a little better about all the stuff I'm bringing, which now that I have it all mostly packed now, isn't all that much objectively.

since I've been at NOAA I've always brought more normal clothes than I would while I was in the oilfiled because we go out and party a lot at NOAA

I also bought 3 big bottles of bodywash and 3 bottles of shampoo/conditioner + misc toiletries and left them on the boat so they'd be there when I got on at the start of my hitch, and by the end of the four months I had just enough before crewchange.

also keep in mind at crowley they'll probably give you working coveralls when you get to the ship, same with PPE like gloves and stuff

also unrelated, saw my old ride the other day, and it's strange seeing it painted up in Bisso colors, since the guys I worked for sold the company.

I didn't know this general existed until now but I am waiting on my medical certification to arrive in the mail and I put in all my documents for my MMC two weeks ago. I've been talking to a recruiter at MSC after being pointed in their direction from a Navy vet friend. I have zero sea time but I am an Army infantry vet who got out a little over 5 years ago and was laid off from my cushy remote admin job earlier this year. After doing research and talking to the MSC recruiter I decided to bite the bullet and go all in.

The recruiter informed me that I am "basically guaranteed" a position with the company even if I have to start off at the lowest position of a SU, which is fine with me. Hopefully I can start as an Assistant Storekeeper though as supply is the route I want to take. I have told myself I am dedicating 5 years to this company at the very least as time flies and I will try my best to become a Junior Supply Officer or even better yet a Supply Officer and then I will reevaluate my next career steps hoping that I may be able to transfer into a supply/warehouse/distribution position with the USPS if I end up missing land a lot (time toward federal pension).

After talking with my friend, the recruiter, and stumbling upon a youtube channel of a woman who works with MSC I am curious about other people's experience with MSC and life at sea really. My plan is to be out to sea at least 8 month of the year but really shooting for 9-10 and then unwind for a couple months and go back at it again. I am familiar with long days and hard work from my Army time and to be honest I miss it. I feel like I've gotten squishy physically and mentally working my office job, not to mention I enjoy how everyday seems to be different tasks to complete rather than sending emails and invoices each week. Anyone with experience working MSC's logistics career route? Any good tips on saving money/reimbursements? Thanks.

Dude, get the fuck away from MSC unless you enjoy being away from home for literally a whole year or more, and having to deal with administrative shenanigans on the regular. There's a reason why MSC's never not hiring. Turnover is insane.

Just join the SIU, man. Go down to your nearest SIU hall (call first if you have to), and present all your documents to them and say you want to start sailing now when they try to sell you the apprenticeship program (though the program isn't bad if you've got the time and patience). You'll start making good money immediately and you'll get union benefits which are actually pretty great, like union insurance after 90 days, and vacation pay (for every 30 days you work on a union ship, you get 15 days of day rate pay, or in simpler terms, for every 60 days, you get a whole month's salary afterwards.

Just avoid MSC, man. Union is your ticket to starting out reliably. Dues are a $1000 initiation fee, payable in installments after your first hitch, and $125 every quarter.

I don't know anything about pensions, but I know that 60% of union contract companies/vessels are MSC or at least MSC-contracted. You could still sail on an MSC vessel via the union and still get the benefits of the union. Unlike joining the MSC straight up where they can keep you on board into perpetuity, Union contracts stipulate after your time is done, you're done. It's just something to think about. You say you wouldn't mind it, but I think even the most grizzled of sailors would get weary quick at having their time to get off and go home pushed further and further back because "reasons".

Yeah, because it's traditional union stuff where you have to go to the physical hall in person to see the job board and sign onto a vessel and any openings. They really try to push the apprenticeship program because it's like a sort of fast-track from entry-level to becoming AB or QMED in a very structured way. Though going through the basic C-book to B-book method works too and they can work that out with you. If you've never been in the industry before, the union is really your best bet to break in as entry level, as opposed to cold-calling a bunch of companies in the hopes they'll take you (they won't). But again, call up a union hall and they'll give these answers to you.

I wouldn't know about switching from MSC, since I never did it myself, only heard from too many people who did to avoid it.

I just read the average salary for merchant marine in the US is approx. 39,000 year apparently and can't find data on BLS.

What's the distribution for that average and are international union prospects better? It seems grossly underpaid considering the nature of the work and commitment. Where are you seeing that number? Thats like entry level deckhand wage for an inland tugboat that doesnt even need an MMC.
Ocean tug AB or experienced OS make $350-$450/day on the west coast. Some guys never get off the boat and stack cash even at that day rate.

Licensed officers make 6 figures everywhere, usually working 180 days per year. If youre licensed and you arent making $600/day youre doing it wrong. I know youre not even an MMC holder, just looking at the career, but those numbers seem really low from my experience.

It might not be accounting for the overtime and hazard pays. I'm entry level OS, and my day rate is $121, but I have an overtime rate of $21 too, so my base pay, assuming no overtime is about $44k if I worked a full 365 day year, but with overtime, it easily goes up to something like $96k, IF all overtime is taken/received. And that's not counting union vacation pay as well (if part of the union), which is one half a month's pay for every month worked. Including that could bring it up to like $145k. But again, that's assuming you actually work every single day of the year. That usually doesn't happen, so it's not really going to be that much, but that's a potential range.

I know SIU has good medical insurance and an ok pension. I don’t know how much the overtime adds to your take home since I never worked on a vessel that paid OT the way SIU ships do.

For comparison I made $250/day as a greenhorn OS on ocean tugs in Alaska. Went to $350 after six months.
This was 10 years ago and I’m pretty sure they’re around $400/day now if not better. I pulled $60k my first year and $75k my second at $350/day at age 27, doing about 200 days per year.

But it wasn’t union and they work the fuck outta the crews up there.
I’m on SIU tugs now at $750/day as CHENG. Our OS/wipers make like $200/day base but there’s a lot of little extras that add up. Probably the same for you.

if unlicensed a cheap timex with a backlight is all you need. Get a nato strap so it's easy to remove and clean. Won't fall off, will work, quartz movement. Dont have to care about scratches. Correct, I'm on a North Sea oil rig resupply boat. British flagged and the cook is Scottish. Are all flips as bad as I get the impression they are? i was thinking of doing it as i was in army for 4 years and i know that the starting rate of pay is about £300 per day then goes upto £1000ish when you become a MSO officer after few years, and its all tax free with uk seafarers tax
