I got a nail in my bike tire. Normally I replace the tube with a new one and patch the old tube. Since nails create a large hole in the actual tire, I usually put a patch in the tire as well just incase. Do you think that is stupid or overkill? What about using car tire plugs(likely cheaper) or bike plugs?

What do you do for larger holes in the tire bigger than a small shard of glass?
