Entirely banning cars at large scale is not feasible and not worth discussing. It's about balance. In the context of urban environments specifically, there can be areas with cars allowed, but not in a situation where we bend over backwards to accommodate them or make walking and cycling have a high risk of death because we're too cheap to install safety improvements like wider sidewalks, bulbouts, daylighting, etc. There are also areas where it'd be appropriate, and even the best course of action, to indeed remove cars, for example: pedestrian plazas/parks, stretches of roads that are crucial commercial corridors with huge amounts of foot traffic. When I say areas in this second context, I mean something like closing a few blocks to cars, but you keep the cross streets open (see Broadway (the street) in NYC on Google Maps for what I mean).
