Is it true this style of derailleur is obsolete now? I have a bunch of old frames and can't find any modern derailleur that fits.

That type was for frames that didn't have a built-in derailleur hanger, best bet is to find some old guy that's into bikes, he'll probably have a shoebox full of those and let you have one for free. Otherwise, might be time to convert your bike to single speed.

You can still find some low end derailleurs with generic claw hangers. Tourney, old Microshift, that sort of stuff. But it would be correct to say it's not the current standard for even decent quality bikes.

There are adapters you could try that let you mount a modern derailleur, ones like picrel seem to be cheap enough online. Found it by searching "claw derailleur hanger" but there's probably a proper name for it
