transit supporters always seem very wont to forget that there are factors that matter a lot more to people than efficiency. even if public transit was meaningfully faster, a large majority of people would rather spend 40 minutes in a comfortable private space with their own music, AC, etc. than a utilitarian public space packed with strangers and generally kept in rather poor cleanliness. it's the same reason people will wait to use their restroom at home instead of using the stall at the gas station, or why people love working from home so much instead of going to the office. people like the sense of comfort and security that a personal, private space gives.
the fact that cars can leave at a moments notice and take you to literally anywhere with a road is nice too, people don't like dealing with the inconvenience of schedules. if there's somewhere you want to go it's a lot nicer to be able to just hop in your car and drive straight there than to check the schedule, walk to your nearest stop, wait for the bus to travel a whole meandering route with multiple stops between, get off at the nearest stop to your destination, walk the rest of the way there, walk back, then wait for the next bus to arrive.
basically in short, if you hold travel time equal or even give public transit a small edge, 95% of people will still prefer cars for comfort and convenience reasons.

Absolutely. I lived in Houston my whole life, much prefer NYC in terms of transit and urban planning. And I'm not just talking Manhattan or whatever, being able to walk to stores in Brooklyn or Queens feels great. I don't really care if it took longer than a hypothetical alternative where those neighborhoods had lots of surface parking and car garages and shit, it just feels good to move on streets with decent sidewalks and modest to low car traffic. Worst thing about NYC is the culture of honking, it really fucking sucks to be leisurely walking somewhere and have a car at the end of the block blare it's horn for virtually no reason. People literally honk when someone doesn't move the split second a traffic light changes. People do that sometimes in Houston too, but I have heard so much needless honking when I've visited NYC. Even cars unrelated to whatever the incident is will start fucking honking.

The other thing that sucks but I just kind of find ironically charming now is that NYC legit smells like piss and garbage throughout a lot of the city. It is a really dirty city, and that's partly because their garbage collection sucks and partly because they don't have accessible bathrooms in public places so people piss in the street. So on one hand you'll be walking around feeling the wind hit your face, getting some blood flowing and feeling good, and then you just hit a gas cloud of piss and garbage. In that sense I definitely think I prefer Euro cities to NYC as far as walkability, but NYC is thr best walkable city I've been to in the US. Haven't been to Chicago so dunno how that is.

Even among car-dependent cities, something about Houston still hits different, and not in a good way. A single hub and spoke transit system won't work, unless you're able to make downtown and the immediate surrounding area its own self-contained zone within the city.

I assume Houston has very high average miles traveled for a commute compared with other metros. If you're driving 40+ miles a day you do end up spending a lot of money on gas and vehicle wear/maintenance and that cancels out a lot of the supposedly lower cost of living.

And then the highest population density is located to the west, not near downtown, not near the focus of where they try to build transit (pic related).

The silver living is that downtown Houston is really growing and densifying and Houston expanded their light rail system.

The price of apartments may lower but at the end of the day they're just cramming more people into pod towers, actual houses aren't going to get any less expensive. To be fair this was ever considered because emergency and utility/cargo vehicles would take forever to respond to where they need to with traffic congestion, and the taxing did nothing to ease traffic because no one lives in mahnhattan except the ultra wealthy. It being an anti car change would be true of emergency and utility vehicles are effected by it.

Car infrastructure is dirt fucking cheap compared to the massive economic boon it generates. Business taxes on car manufacturers alone (if properly collected) likely cover the cost of road maintenance.

Essentially all taxpayers own cars and use public roads. It's like saying public healthcare costs taxpayers "too much" - doesn't really apply when all of them are using and benefitting from it. It's not funneling money from a large group of taxpayers to a smaller group who benefits. The 0.5% of the population who cycles everywhere whining about their taxes going towards roads is like having 0.5% of the population who never has a single health issue whining about their taxes paying for other people's surgeries and medication.

Texas is on the same path California went through in the 20th century. Shit might be affordable now, but in years time Houston and Dallas will end up like San Francisco & Los Angeles. Commute times continue to increase every year, highway tolls spike due to the influx of repairs needed to be done on the beltways. A Major difference is that Texas upholds the law when it comes to petty crime. The Homeless will carry multiple pistols in order to steal a bunch of menstruation pads at a Walgreens, or protect their tents from the police further reducing the QoL in the city. Inhabitants of the city's metro won't bother going to the city when it's a shithole and keep to their neighborhood until people can't afford to live thete and the number of homeless people & drug addicts spikes. With major tech companies moving to places like Austin, techbros will begin to further drive up prices and change the culture for the worst. The only ones that benefit are landlords who purchased property decades ago, selling off their inventory and heading out to states like Nevada. Those who moved to the state for being affordable will see the quality of life deteriorate and then move to another state, thus the cycle repeats. This isn't even about "trains vs cars" anymore, it's about a state that's seen unprecedented growth, and continues to keep things as it is. California did that, and became a shithole. Instead of building good infrastructure, they stagnated for decades until public transit became shit and you have neighborhoods like Skid Row. Unironically there is a point there. Cost of living in CA is high, a more productive and efficient lane use + transportation scheme can be one step towards remedying that. You’d still have corporations and businesses looking for the cheapest place to set up shop but the fact of the matter is California remains one of largest economies in the world. Oh no doubt, California has turned it around. The point is Suburbs are SPREAD out and not densified which leads to the current housing crisis and less taxpayer money. Which makes it harder to fund Maintenance projects for Highways and Road due to being so much of it existing and very few people living around it.

Cars become hot as well especially through humidity not everyone drives a Tesla like you do. As for comfort that is subjective. I can do whatever while someone takes me to my destination and not have too keep my eyes on the road all the time. Whether that is bus or train. As for going anywhere. Everyone will always go to restaurants, shop, watch entertainment or see a pharmacist and doctor. Trains perform this function easily, they will always take you to the main attractions and also have union stations that function like malls for all the things you need. Just without needing to go outside for them.

It has. Even with traffic, a comparable phnlic eoute would still take longer than taking my car. Bus / light rail isn't useful for spontaneous trips if it only comes every 30 minutes and not the 7 minutes transportation experts recommend.

What houston needs more of is transportation alternatives because car-only model doesn't work for anyone. Now that they're growing with tons of new apartments downtown they obviously have the density and rider base for transit, which will clear up their traffic congestion.
