An EV is a new car, if the old car is still running good with the exhaust system fully functional, then it's probably both cheaper for you and better for the environment if you just drive the old car until it dies. Only then can you say that an EV is more environmentally friendly, because you don't have a car anyway. Consooming is the root problem.

Smaller engines that get put on mopeds and bicycles like those in lawnmowers, leafblowers etc. don't usually have a comprehensive exhaust system. Unlike most cars the engines also have sub-optimal injection and combustion and are much less thermodynamically efficient, weight to weight. This makes them emit much MUCH more soot, NOx, other particles, unburnt fuel etc.
