In a hypothetical world where /n/'s wet dream of a train network / carless walkable city takeover, will I still be able to own a beater Jeep and take it /out/ to the middle of nowhere to go camping? or will I have to bike 100 miles to get to my spots?
(please dont say there will be a train link the day a pristine mountainous forest is ruined by a train running through it is the day I become a domestic terrorist)

Literally no one with any actual, thought out political opinion here want's to *ban* cars. Most people just want to reduce reliance on cars or at worst make the city cater to it's own immediate residents. The only people who seethe about that are suburboids who want to have it both ways, both be isolated from traffic in a suburban home and be the traffic in the city, with a free-of-charge expressway and ample parking, at the city's and its residents' expense.
I'm so fucking tired of people jumping to defend something they don't partake in because someone convinced them everything is a slippery slope.

Those people linger in your head a lot longer than those who would like some bollards installed. Normal and reasonable discussion, with reasonable demands, is overwhelmingly dominated by pro-transit and pro-cycling positions. The car is 5k and the bike is around 100$.

I think its an inequality. Cars are extremely expensive compared to most consumer bikes. You never own them when you lease them, and so the cost of entry seems cheaper, but you shouldn't forget that:
A - a user can typically do much less damage to a car relative to its functionality in a 3 year lease term than they can to a bike within 3 years.
B - The car itself still has a cost of over 40-50k if its a luxury car, sometimes as much as 80k for new BMWs, regardless of what the monthly cost is
C - cars retain value more than bikes due to how little wear is put on compared to distance travelled
D - cars benefit from the economy of scale which makes parts cheaper to produce given the same level of technical complexity and parts quantity.
If bikes had the same conditions cars did, they would cost less than a grand for a high end touring bike, and a lease could cost around 5 bucks a month, with the bike being worth roughly 80% of its original sale price at the end of the lease term. This of course, isn't the case, but u kno wat I meen.

As other people in this thread have said, no one reasonable wants to ban cars outright, just restrict their use in the downtowns of cities which have had transit for years. If anything, better transit and car free cities makes your hobby easier, as you won't have to share the road with a million city commuters.

I just want better bike infrastructure so that bike traffic and car traffic isn't awkwardly sandwiched together and I am not in life threatening danger any time a car/truck driver makes relatively minor mistakes.
If I make a mistake on a bike path I get scratched up, maybe some bruises, and at worst a broken bone or two.
Meanwhile on the road with cars some asshole swerves into the bike lane for half a second because they weren't paying attention and I die at no fault of my own besides "choosing" to be on the road while not being in a car/truck.

While low speed inner city sharing of roads between bikes and cars works with minimal modification, when car traffic goes beyond ~ 35-40 mph physical separation between bike traffic and car traffic is nessasary. A little line of paint in the gutter isn't enough. Especially when cars regularly ignore them.

If not that then at least make sidewalks universal, wide enough that bike and foot traffic can coexist on them, and normalize the use of bikes on sidewalks since cars refuse to safely share the road.
Had a car driver feel morally justified in throwing a beer bottle at me because they thought it was wrong that a bike could pass them on the sidewalk.
Yet the week before had a idiot in a suv yell profanities at me because I was in the bike lane and it interfered with their ease in going into the turning lane.
Basically if you aren't a car then car drivers hate you.

Fine, give us non cars dedicated paths of our own so you can stop killing us.

People can get a great used car deal if they 1) pay cash. OR 2) find a used car less than 10y/100k

With number 2 a bank will write you a low apr car loan (3%-5%) and that approx 15 to 20 thousand dollar car ends up to be 300 to 350 a month.

Thats why the prices for ca$h used cars, unfinanceable ones are looooow.

This is SUV citydweller logic.

The reason why SUVs are the most popular kind of car, for city dwellers, is that they justify the size by some rare outdoorsy mythos, just like you are doing. The reality is, the offensively large, dangerous, inefficient SUV is almost entirely driven in the city.

It's highly unlikely that the outdoor activities you do require anything more than a small hatchback with a towbar for a bike rack, which is what you should own.

People who actually require large 4WD, should have them, but almost -everyone- thinks that's them, and it's delusional.

I have a 47 year old beater Land Rover and a shed full of spares, no part can't be switched out using basic tools, plus it runs on red diesel which I get from a local farm at cost price.

I don't drive it on public roads, only through the village (no police around) and across farmland, through woodland and over common land. Completely undocumented, I use it for camping and fishing trips up into the peaks, occasionally drive across the border into Scotland, again avoiding public roads. Up here in Cumbria it's possible to travel around for days without ever seeing another car, just the occasional farmer who are always friendly to a landy, as long as you are respecting their land.

nah, it's the sad reality that no realistic alternatives to driving exist. especially for most daily trips that are often < 3 miles and could be easily accomplished by other means. OP's talking about having a practical car to lug a bunch of camping gear to the parking lot of a site 100 miles away. as someone who's driven a bike 100 miles in a single day before, it's pretty hardcore. unless you're in the tour de france, your entire next day WILL be spent stretching in a state of exhaustion

Nah the most difficult pary about lifestyle inflation is realizing you can live like a mizer and drive a 98 mitsu mirage but if you're packing your kids jam sandwiches and shopping thrift for them then youre just an asshole.

Cheapness is sad. It is a psychological reaction to past poverty. It doesnt even save money. Plus cheap people fail to calculate the value of their own time and experiences.

If your at Disneyland and your kid wants a frozen banana you pop out the $12 and buy one. We only have so much time in our earthsuit we shouldnt fret over how much money the things that make people we love happy.
