That's pretty unusual here (NYC), you don't "ask for a seat". If the person is ancient it happens automatically when about 5 people will try to be the cool guy who gave up his seat. It's funny when a middle aged karen rushes to grab the seat before the geezer and acts like she didn't notice he was there.

About the only time you ever see asking going on is when one of those fatherless 14 year olds who looks 25 is manspreading taking up 3 seats and playing shitty music on his phone with an angry face, hoping to get attention for being annoying because no parental unit ever showed him love, and then a grandma comes along and goes "can I sit down please" and he tries to act tough while "allowing" her to sit and you know he's crying inside because that's the most non-negative attention he's gotten from an older person in his life.

Buddy there was an invention called walkman, then there was another invention called MP3 player, and then there was yet another invention about 15 years ago called the (modern) smartphone, each of which can function as an MP3 player. in addition other things have been invented, such as headphones and streaming services. There are probably even more inventions that could help. No matter how full or empty, if you hear people talk in public transport ever, you should get any of the aforementioned technological inventions

I usually move my bag if asked, but I do purposefully put it there hoping nobody asks because the vast majority of people don't where I live. Sometimes I won't, though, like if I clearly have something with me and have nowhere to put it. People take the bus or train for A LOT of reasons. If I had like 2-3 bags of groceries with me, you'd have to be a retard to ask me to move my bags and hold a shit ton of stuff in my lap. Or if it's something bulky or very heavy I've got, I obviously need the seat to hold it so I will keep the seat no matter what.

But overall the alpha male move is to be a courteous gentleman and vacate the seat of your possession if you can reasonably carry it and allow the person to sit, especially if they're elderly or pregnant. Fatties don't get a seat, I don't care how bad their ankles hurt, they shouldn't have got fat. Indian people are also to be refused, because they don't know what deodorant is and are constantly emitting the smell of spices from their pores. I don't want their clothes and skin touching me, so they get to fuck off as well. Zoomers I don't like to say yes to unless they're by themselves and sometimes I'll ignore them unless it's a hot teen girl.

Am I alone in thinking it's only a recent phenomenon? It could be my own bias recollecting things but I don't really remember it being such a thing just 10 years ago or 15. Phones were a bit shittier in those days but they still functioned the same and could play music anywhere, but I still don't remember it being really common then. But now it's like any train car or bus I get into, there's some retard playing something...or a few people having a phone call on speaker phone which is weird because who wants to broadcast their conversation?

For lulz you could always get up and stand after 10 seconds, just so they feel dumbfounded. For even more lulz you could then stare at them while you continue to stand and see if they put the bag back on the seat or not.

However if you had other seats on the bus he could have sat at you could have politely told him to set it one of those. Basically it's interactions like this where people have no common courtesy for each other that makes riding the bus s***** and sucks. When you ride an express bus in the morning with the same commuters day after day and the same driver and they're all looking out for you it's one thing but random bus rides will almost always suck
