walking to the stop will be rewarding and it'll shed some pounds. getting a bike employs mechanical advantage and you will still loose weight but not as fast for the same effort, but it's funner and you can push yourself to more effort than walking for more fun and loss. real gym-type exercises and especially diet are the quickest pathways to weight loss but many people do lose significant weight from bikes since they enjoy it and do it all the time.
get a non-department-store brand 90s mtb, put wide slick or semi-slick tires on it, keep them under the appropriate pressure for your weight, and get the wheelset professionally tensioned and trued and that's the simplest, cheapest entry for a bike reliable under your size. it'll be strong enough and it'll have low enough gearing to get you up any hill, get the gearing tuned at a shop (or just learn how) and learn how to use them. a triple crank's innermost gear is a tiny "granny" gear that'll work for literally any hill at any load in conjunction with the big gears on the wheel
