1.) 3x faster than walking. 15mph on the flats is easy.
2.) Great full body workout, far superior to bicycling, work your legs, glutes, abs, even some upper body muscles.
3.) Extremely low cost to entry. A decent scooter like a Razor A5 Lux is like $70 or less. Even a high quality Made In Taiwan bicycle style kick scooter like a KickBike is only $500.
4.) Surprisingly efficient. I can do 11 miles in 1 hour in very hilly terrain.
5.) Easy to work on. They usually take standard skateboard bearings, use a bicycle style headset, and companies like Razor offer a full parts catalog so you can get new wheels and whatnot.
6.) FUN.
Cons:
1.) Very few of the smaller folding style kick scooters have pneumatic tires. In fact the only one I'm even aware of is the Razor A5 Air. The pneumatic tires mean rolling over gravel and sticks isn't a big deal at all. KickBikes do have bicycle style tires, but they're not compact and don't fold. With the hard urethane wheels you get a great glide on perfectly smooth sidewalks and asphalt but cracks and gravel can make your ride a bit shit.
2.) If you kick your ankle bone into the side it is BRUTAL. I wear ankle protectors.
3.) While most Razor style kick scooters are pretty bomb proof and parts are available to fix them if they do break, they always feel a little rickety like the tolerances of the headset is just a little off.
I've put 84 miles on my Razor A5 Air and 122 miles on my KickBike Sport G4. Great fun. Great exercise. I recommend it to everyone.
