Rim brakes are superior to hydraulic disk brakes and I'm tired of pretending they're not.

2. Fully self-serviceable

Mass adoption of disk brakes was nothing short of disastrous for cycling tech.

I noticed my e-scooter's disc brakes always get fucked up and misaligned after driving in the rain and splashing through poodles.

I never had this problem on a regular bicycle with rim brakes.

I don't like rim brakes because when my rim gets out of true after jumps or dh then I have to fuck with my brakes.

Lmaoo doing brakes is literally one of the easiest maintenances you do on a car.
And you dont even need special tools.

And no, we use discs because they are BETTER. the goal is to brake in the shortest distance no matter how wet, dirty or snowy it is. Same with bikes.
I want peak performamce on every ride and in every condition.
Doesnt really matter if they are 100g heavier. Frames and bikes got lighter anyway.

The absolute stopping power isn't the be all end all of braking. Modulation matters a lot. Wet weather performance matters a lot. Both are a lot better with disc brakes.

They are used on smaller cheaper cars. Think of Dacia Sandero or something.
Main problem is that drum brake can't dissipate heat that well, and shit modulation.
Some motorcycles do use them too.

I'm sorry but the negligible weight gains do not compensate for the innumerable drawbacks of disk brakes. The only reason my bike still uses rim brakes is because the frame is incompatible

I agree with you, but like other people have said almost all disc brakes are fully serviceable. Personally I feel like if the tech for drum brakes had the decades of attention and millions upon millions in R&D that rim and disk brakes had then they would be the best option for most people. That said I ride a fixie with only the front rim brake, my legs are my brakes most of the time.

Washing the bike afterwards is a pain sadly, especially when water gets through the saddle clamp, the seatpost has to come out and the bike has to get flipped for all the water to come out. I should probably drill a drain hole and wrap the clamp with an old inner tube

I have sks raceblades on the bike, they work okay, but after a 20km ride in the rain the whole bike is dirty, especially the drivetrain.
Water runs into the frame mostly when the bike is being washed, not when it's ridden. Also greasing the seapost has mostly mitigated my problems. A drain hole and a tube wrap would still be useful.

It depends. When I still raced cx I had rims get worryingly concave within 2 seasons. For road I've had wheels start making noise around 20,000 miles, probably from the spokes or nipples or whatever. The rims still had some life left, but at that point just replace them. They've done their job.

Depends on the hardness of the pads you use but in general 15-20k is a decent ballpark figure for alloy rims.

With Carbon wheels and rim brakes on the other hand you'd be lucky to get over 10k, on steeper descents you can overheat the braking surface and destroy the wheel in one go. They also have utterly shit braking performance compared to alloy rims

If you could really do all that you'd know that car brakes aren't rocket science. Literally the hardest part about servicing brake parts, or suspension parts, is opening the rusted bolts and getting things apart. Other than that it's just a giant puzzle.

i like rimmies because they feel really good and always work
theyre fun and if i was gonna ride round the world it would be with cantilevers
i live in an extemely hilly place though and worry il wear through my rims
i also have to deal with alot of mud and wet
i like the ability to change wheel sizes with disks too

if the road is wet or dirty but its not really raining much theyre great
as soon as its actually raining or if you ride in some actual mud you and your bike are getting soaked no matter what

road spray is dirty it's different than rain. Also with a raincoat on it takes a long time to soak through the bottom of your undies just from rain.

this is probably the biggest reason that I rarely ride on the road
i hate not being able to relax or zone out and the quality of driving in my country is significantly lower than the UK or most of northern Europe where I'm from, which was already bad enough

Fenders work great here. When mountain biking it helps keep my bike clean, and reduce the mud content in my face.

On my road bike it works good but tends to rub too much so I abstain.

taking shortcuts
its fun
that said im only riding in rural english towns and backroads so its probably not at all the same as a city in (god forbid) america
btw that cyclist in the video is an idiot on multiple levels
hes positioned badly
hes too close to the car
his fingers werent already on the brakes
and he tried to turn the wrong fucking way
if you ride safely and dont do any of the things he did then you can relax
