Motorbikes are very efficient at low speeds (below 100kmh) and low engines (below 500 cc)
At high speeds they suffer from shit ass aerodinamic coefficients.
And bigger engines have similar outputs to cars, therefore consume as much if not more than cars due to higher revs required to squeeze those power numbers from fewer cilinders.

Basically
Smallish motorbike/moped good
Big motorbike bad

I could've renovated my home with no insulation and run an LPG boiler and FAS and I would probably end up no worse monetarily in the course of wasting fuel over the course of 20 years. But I did not because i'm not a third world degenerate who prides himself in unnecesarry and obscene waste.

It was very easy to build a motorbike. Make a robust bicycle slapping a few pipes togheter and get the engine from someone else or just do a little bit of casting for yourself since its just a single 4 stroke cylinder banger (we talking before the 60s).
Brakes? drums are ok. Suspensions? you get only some weird contraprion just with springs on the front wheel. no hydraulics involved.

So much like ebikes nowadays you could easily have hundreds of small company building their own motorbikes. Same was going over in italy.

I like the MSF course, if you don't have one nearby harley davidson has a rider course.
Otherwise buy a small motorcycle and do some motojitsu drills or follow some other regimen. Practice for the dmv rider test, and pass

Are you sure? Might depend on country/state. In WA, anything with three wheels requires a trike endorsement. Regardless of it having pedals, bars, etc. Even those electric Solo cars require a three wheel endorsement.

I'd never ride/drive anything with three wheels because it's a ridiculously unstable configuration. They roll extremely easily.

I love motorcycles.
I live in a rural area with zero public transportation or bike lanes.
Spring summer and fall I'm mostly on one of these.
60 and 100mpg, insurance is 200$ a year each, and my wife and I can go on any forest road I want without some 15mpg 4x4.

We're going to have kids soon though, so I'll have to get a year round car, which is lame.

I still own two cars because those are the two I don't want to sell for pretty much no reason other than not seeing a need to.
I haven't touched those in years, they are registered, tax is paid, insured but the MOT /DOT whatever is long overdue.
Countless of other Anons cycle exclusively. Because of the environment and by extension their fellow man. They refuse to be weak degenerate cripples burdening nature and society with wasted ressources, emissions and more. And to be honest I couldn't care less wether any cyclist couldn't afford a vehicle or not, it would not have an impact on the validity behind their reasoning to go by bycicle and refuse to partake in degenerate motoring.
In my personal observation motorvehicles and associated culture are, at least in the west / first world, strongly associated with 'poverty' that is the lower class. As is questioning of someones motivation to do anything having to do with their wealth. In fact wealthy people don't seem to ever think along those lines.

400cc is a weird class of bike, I used to have an old 450 twin myself. So if it's strictly an inner city bike, 400cc twin is more than adequate as a starter bike but fast enough to get yourself killed in a spectacular way, I mean even the ninja 400 is claimed to do 0-60 in about 4s. It can do highway but it's going to suck so once you get experienced, the 400 will feel underbiked for highway rides. I'll say though, a 400 twin makes a far better inner city bike than a 600 inline-4 supersport designed specifically for highway speeds. If you have decent mind-muscle coordination then you might be better off with a 650 or 700 twin if you plan to run significant highway mileage

Just because it can go that speed doesn't mean it'll do it comfortably. My 450 had to do like 7-8k rpm to cruise at 80mph, I once took that 700 miles down state and winding the engine that high for that long made it an exhausting ride

I cruise at 65-70mph in the right hand lane on most bikes.
Wind buffeting increases a ton when you get towards 80mph unless you have large fairings or a sport bike.

Sport bikes are pretty similar to road bikes when looking at aero and why sportbikes have that position.

It's generally metropolises that are the worst, or in some freeways 75/85 is actually the speed limit. Pretty sure on highway 80 near the salt flats it's a 75 or 85 limit.
Also down in texas it's high too.
Lots of californians do 80 and many over. luckily the semi trucks are limited to around 60-65 so I can cruise with them.

I used to have a Honda XL125V and that thing was perfectly comfortable on highway. And it went 110 km/h, which was enough to keep up with traffic here, with throttle wide open sitting almost on the rev limiter. Absolutely no problem holding that for hours on end. But with that little power overtaking becomes a problem.

The only problem with a 400 is if you've installed aftermarket pipes that scream like hell and you can't stand listening to that for hours. But with stock pipes there's 0 reasons why 400 can't be comfortably ridden on highway for hours at a time. No, the engine doesn't care if it's sitting on 7 - 10k rpm for all day. They're literally made for that.

on one hand I want to get a shitbox and wrench on it, but on the other I can't economically justify the decision when I know I can get a brand new cbf125 for 3000 and get better performance and reliability, even a guarantee for what's essentially not that big of a price hike.

a lot less headache, more and "safer" riding I pressume.
I'm torn about the decision. also I can finance a new bike, not that it's the best financial decision but it would work for me

I'm a burger and I've been thinking about one myself, ADV stuff is my only real interest when it comes to bikes and the 390 seems to be the only beginner option that can keep up with traffic here. (Fwiw I'm planning on getting it AFTER I move to a smaller town where I won't have to contend with 80mph freeway traffic though.) Either getting a Navi or Grom. Want something to put around town in that's easy on gas. I see the Navi everywhere here, the low price and not needing a bike license makes it a tempting buy. Last I checked they very much still require a motorcycle license, at least where I live.
Style of brake has nothing to do with it.
Anything not a 4 wheeled or more vehicle over 49 cc requires a motorcycle license.
Only gray area is shit like e-bikes and e-scooters (for now). And cops will still yonk e-shit too if they see you riding fast on it on public roads and don't at least have a valid license.

"more" torque is a bad way to put it if we're comparing same displacement, different cylinder count. The torque is more immediate, you'll have more immediate torque down low rpm but as you wind the engine up, it'll lose steam compared to the two cylinder, which will rev higher and thus have more power at the cost of having less immediate power down in the rev range. It's all about what you plan to do with the bike, if it's a street bike you're better off with two, if it's a dirt bike, 1 is better, generally but not always.

Naked bikes are generally cheaper too. Plus it looks like a Ducati Monster so it's super cool.

single cylinders are better for slow speed, more cylinders is generally optimized for higher speed.

Both will do the job fine. If you plan on doing freeway action or 60+mph stuff a lot get the parallel twin. Sub 60mph go for the dirtbike.

The Grom is cooler. I also wanted to mod it for fun. Did some research it’s possible to rig fishing pole holders onto it. The underwear storage would perfect for any tackle and maybe some water too.
I’m going to go with the Grom, learn on that. Either pick up a second one down the line or upgrade to a bigger/faster bike if I think I want to get into that. Don’t really care to go that fast though can’t see myself ever going over 60

a used seller will probably sell to you without a license, or get a motorcycle learners permit first, then you can easily buy a used bike off someone or buy one from a dealer but they probably won't let you test drive it first.

The older ones make less power then the newest ones. Both are not fast, but can get you down the road at 70-80mph. I demoed one back in.... 2017/2018. Nice bikes, but if you aren't willing to wrench I hope you have a dealer nearby. If any of the ones you look at have clutch issues or really high mileage it better be cheap. Clutch changes are very infrequent, but time consuming when you have to do them since the transmission has to come off. A bike in the 50,000 mile range would be close to needing it depending on riding location and technique.

I knew a couple dudes who used v7's for touring before the v85tt came out since the v7 has a low seat height and upright riding position. The engines are fun and smooth once you get to 5k+rpm. The big blocks(1000cc+) are great too if you want more bike/faster/more performance.

Some v7's have hydraulic clutch's and others don't.
Yeah if it's a cable clutch you have the adjuster on the lever, and one on the back of the transmission next to the output shaft. If you do see it and it's cable all of mine have a heavy clutch pull.
Do some digging on the moto guzzi forums to learn. If you rock up and see transmission oil on the connection at the transmission and engine (it smells) don't buy it unless you are a wrench/mechanic.
If it's hydraulic it could just need new fluid, or the slave might need to be looked at.

Poorfag here: check out my classic bike! Honda made a million of these things back in the day and there's plenty still around, mine is worth the same $2000 bucks I paid 20 years ago. On the other hand it's a very landmark in motorcycle history, showed the world of the 1970's what the future of motorcycles was going to look like and they're still cranking out its descendants today.
You don't have to be rich to own something cool, practical, classy, and fun. You kinda DO need to like wrenching though...

I don't have anymore but back in the day I had this CM450E that I cafe'd. I got it through a 1 to 1 trade, fixed up guitar amplifier that I fixed from non working for a non working CM450E. I was really poor then (still am) and what Goldwing anon says is true, you can have a cool bike but knowing how to wrench will be necessary.
My first motorcycle was a CB125S however, so this CM450E was my second. Fun fact, old Hondas used a 180-degree crank for their twins, my CM450E was a 360-degree crank, so it vibrated like a single. It was a fun little bike, optimized for lower speed inner city street fighting, my favorite kind of riding.
So yeah, I've been on bikes from bicycles to motorcycles my whole life. I don't have a motorcycle anymore but the itch is there, I'm in a position to buy a brand new modern bike too. I kind of want a brand new SV650 but it's a Suzuki (ew) but I also want the CB650R, it's just the SV650 is a better value and better suited platform for a deep inner city street fighter. I'm also eyeing the XSR700 (or R7) and CB750 but we'll see. I might just go full stupid and get a supermoto like the DRZ400SM. It's easy to window shop, hard to actually buy, I like bikes so much, bicycles and motorcycles.

I started out on a KLR650 after taking a course. Do the course, it's invaluable. I'm 6'3 with a 31" inseam. Could just barely flat foot it. Yeah, I'm mostly torso. Anyways, I think the KLR650 is a good starter bike if you are big enough. There is lowering links you could put on to lower the seat hight at the cost of ground clearance. I've moved on to a big indian cruiser and whenever I see a KLR I miss the adventures I'd go on.

Something like a tenere 700 would be way better on the highway if you're tall and willing to spend 10k. Otherwise I'd go for a dr 650 or something even slighter like a drz or even a tw 200 if you don't plan to ride on interstates at all

Why aren't Americans into bikes as much? You always hear so much about how cars are pretty much a necessity in America, and how it's hard for students and poorfags to cope without one, but why don't they get a bike instead? Until you get a family it's gonna be enough for all your needs. And I know Americans associate bikes with those gangs with their multi litre monstrosities, but 250-400 CC is more than enough for commuting.

This scares off many people
2.impractical
Most people need/want a car to drive around, and used ones(were) and still kind of are cheap. No matter where you live motorcycling will be a compromise. It could snow, be super hot, rain a ton, or something else depending on where you live.
3.Lazyness
Here in the US people are either very lazy, or some sort of athlete. The fitter people are willing to ride bicycles, motorcycles, etc. While other people it would be hard to coerce them to do some cardio. IMO stems from school and culture.
