Integrated vs semi integrated headset?

What are the advantages of each? Does an integrated headset damage the frame since the bearings sit directly in the frame?

34mm external headsets cannot be used with new conical fork steerers.
Also, integrated headsets are supposed to be lighter.
In the end, you use whatever your frame has.

What? Why would it? The bearing balls do not contact the frame, they are encapsuled in the bearing race assembly. The assembly sitting in the frame should not damage it any more than any other form of bearing. All stresses are equally distributed.

Integrated didn’t last because people like to buy their own shit, internal is most common these days because all the headtubes are oversized these days anyways so even if you use big ballz and replaceable headset cups you can still fit everything inside without increasing the stack (which is what external bearings do)

But yes, you just get whatever fits both your frame and the fork you want, it’s not difficult. My gravel bike has an external upper headset but came with an internal lower headset (that fit 1 1/8”), I had to swap it out for an external lower headset (that fit 1.5”)

Yeah forgot to mention that I'm having a custom steel bike built so I have to chose what kind of headset. Integrated is easier to service but what kind of advantages does the internal/semi integrated has?

and what if the machined bearing surface wears out?

With the standard i take a steel rod and pop the old ones out, and hammer new ones in, not hard at all .
