I'm thinking of learning to ride a motorcycle and get my license. Any tips?

Also, what's a good beginner bike? I'm looking at getting a dual sport because there are a lot of gravel and dirt roads where I live. The Suzuki DRZ-400 looks like a reliable bike. Thoughts?

300-400cc jap bike like a kawasaki ninja 400, yamaha r3, etc.
Dual sports are great too but they hold value in the used market so be prepared to pay more.

Other good dual sports are
>yamaha wr250
many consider this the goat of low cc 4 stroke dual sports
>kawasaki kdx 220/200
vintage 2 stroke that is a cult bike
>yamaha bw200 or xt225/xt250
simple basic bikes, but should be found much cheaper then a drz or wr250
>honda xr250 or 400
another vintage cult bike. 250 would be a great beginner bike, 400's are just damn good.

Lots of options out there

Thank you, I'll look into that.

For some reason I'm set on the DRZ, but man, it's pretty overpriced for how outdated it is. Do you know of any bikes that are as torque-y as the DRZ?

Can be changed via sprockets on smaller bikes, but generally you want a similar size displacement for similar torque.

Honestly the dual sport game has been fucked up for a while, so ancient designs like a drz still do well.

If you don't mind a tall bike the honda xr650L should have similar if not more torque. Suzuki dr650 should be similar but it's getting closer to more of a heavier bike.

honda xr650r is faster but that's not really a beginner bike, especially offroad.

If you didn't mind running more of a road bike a ktm duke 390 would be a good choice. Stick some 50/50 tires on there and it would be fine for just light dirt use.

Wish Suzuki would get off their asses and update the DRZ with a 6 speed, EFI, maybe water cooling, aluminum frame, and better handling. It's ridiculous they charge $7200 USD for what's basically a 23 year old bike.

They need competition for that. I unironically hope the chinese will do it, since the euros only do 2 stroke dual sports now/cost too much.

Drz does have watercooling, but I agree they could improve the frame, wheels, handling, etc.

The CRF300L and KLX300 offer good competition. Australia is requiring motorcycles sold there to have ABS and Suzuki stopped selling the DRZ-400S there (they still sell the E variant). Idk if they'll just stop selling them, bolt on an ABS system from one of their other bikes, or maybe it will push them to finally update it. Also, emissions regulations in a lot of countries are getting stricter. Eventually globalhomo countries will stop allowing grandfathered vehicles or update the grandfathered status to only vehicles that match recent standards.

I doubt they'll do anything until their hand is forced. They've been making the same bike for 23 years and charge way more than they should yet people keep buying them, lol.

I'm speculating of course.
