Is this a good "low maintenance commuter" for $600? 8-speed hub and adjustable stem. Further down the line I would like to put wider/softer tires and a 250W motor on it. Is this retarded?

no reflectors

Probably the 8 speed internal gear hub is the most valuable piece on this thing. If it's shimano, it's probably worth 300 bucks.
But this bike per se is probably worth 80 bucks.

I doublt you will be able to install a middrive electric motor afterwards. Even if you would have the knowledge, NOT WITH A HUB MOTOR. That hub will die in 1 week.

Sweet baby Jesus. These things were on their way out 30 years ago. At the very least, it has a threadless headset, unlike the OP.

These bikes should not exist to buy new in [current year]. You will literally find something better at a scrap yard or on ebay/facebook marketplace.
