Are E-Bike conversion kits worth it? Bought myself a nice normal bike (belt drive) a few months ago but now I moved to very hilly city (imagine like San Fransisco) where a normal bike is a pain in the ass.

What options do I have? I couldn't find any conversion kits that work with belt drives.

how can i tell a cheap battery that uses lower capacity cells from one that skimps on safety features? id be willing to deal with shorter range to save $50-$100 but i dont want a molotov cocktail between my legs or under my ass while riding.

they are worth it.
it's relatively easy if you know how to fix your bike.
it's not "simple" if you have never even changed a BB. There are plenty of things that will need to be adapted and modified.

THE EASIEST way is to buy a kit for the front wheel and live with it. Thy have started popping out everywhere here in Italy, i guess they are a common fashion in the west world nowadays. I think thy are more easily available to LBS.

The Tongsheng TSDZ2 comes with standard 110 or 130bcd crank arms so you can fit a ring of your choice to turn it into a belt drive

hub drives are even easier but they suck and have the riding feel of a moped

Get a hub motor with at least 1500w so you can keep up with traffic.

I've been commuting to work this year on a cyclone mid drive conversion. There's almost never a need to change gears unless your hills are super steep, and the chain just starts skipping if it goes outside the middle 3 gears, so most of the effort was wasted. It seems to be more of an offroad mtb thing or for getting maximum performance out of legal power limits.

I'll retract my opinion if anyone presents a good way to get get a wide range of gearing on a high-power mid drive in the long run. I think a 3 speed regular chain might work but haven't seen it done and don't wanna throw money at trying.

I had it on a completely fresh chain. I'd put it down to the sprockets being worn cuz it was a problem on the bike to begin with that just got much worse with the motor.
I do still blame the mid drive because my m8 with a BBS02 on a completely fresh bike started without the problem, only for it to appear after a few months of occasional use.

I have a litrebike, but I ran over and killed a cat going just 20 over and now fast isn't that fun anymore. The 1-2KW bicycle kit fills it's own niche. If it can keep up with suburban traffic you can use paths for bikes, cars, and people, so you get the best of all worlds and it becomes a much better commuter.

Yeah... electric bikes in a lot of places aren't legally bikes so have to behave like cars without enough speed (you can't go fast enough by law) to keep up with traffic.
I've a friend with an electric anonymous commuter bike thing that will do about 40mph while sliping under the radar. Not bat that pos.

Is there a conversion kit that's specifically designed only for assistance up the occasional hill? Something that's low capacity but powerful enough to take the edge off a steep incline.
