I do not have a car, I do not have a drivers licence. I have never ridden a road bike.

I want to buy a road bike and go for some nice long, exploratory road riding but things like this confuse the fuck out of me and worry me especially if I don't plan the trip.

Commuters, hobby road riders, wanna-be racers, 4chan schizophrenics:

If it matters more than the fact we drive on the left, I'm in Australia not the USA

There are three ways to make a turn like that:

If you want to be charitable with the "take the turning lane" thing, I like to stop one or two car lengths back and leave some space for a car to pass me (if it's safe to do so, like if I can straddle a concrete median while waiting). It also helps that car trigger the magnetic switch for the advance turn lights (which my aluminum bike never fucking does, I swear to god), which means I also get through faster.

If it's a very busy intersection I would advise you to use the crosswalks to get to the bike lane on the other side.

Making an unprotected left turn from a standstill on a bike at a busy intersection = a million people honking at you and angry because you can't instantly accelerate from 0 to 20mph and turn. Take routes that minimize turns if possible

That's the sweet sound of victory over cagers.
But more seriously, the real factor for me is usually the interaction with traffic while trying to get into the turning lane. Once in a lane, you can own it and all they can do is seethe. But merging into a busy traffic lane is a massive pain, especially near an intersection when cars are starting close in with each other and decelerating/accelerating in response to the signals.

That's called a hook turn and it's what the government says to do but I've never seen anyone do it
Would you fully do it like this and just join the other lane at the crossing?

I like going all the way to curb though, because I wedge my front wheel into the curb and lift the rear end of the bike to turn it to the new direction, like a fulcrum and lever. Maybe that's less of an issue if you're a roadie though? I carry a large pannier so the bike is kinda annoying to lift.
Still, the "proper left" where you use the turning lane (or I guess "proper right" in AUS) is way more comfy if traffic conditions allow for it. Probably why you've rarely seen hook turns.

1. Rule of cycling: You go. Motorcripples are fucking stupid degenerates and have to wait. If they hit you it's their fault and they are liable. After all they do enough operating a murdercage alone and they are very aware of associated risks and still decide to do so.
2. You turn left on your green or at will as long as no pedestrian is crossing the lane youre turning into. Also watch out for homosexual cyclists and 'e-bike' fags on the cycling lane. Ruins your day when turning left.
3. You go straight on green or at will.
4. You ONLY turn right if no one coming your way wants to go straight or (their) left.
5. If someone coming your way wants to go (their) right you both turn right infront of each other.
6. If crosswalks are present let pedestrians cross.
7. A bicycle is not a pedestrian. It ha sno business on sidewalks or crosswalks.
8. If several parallel lanes are presentmake lane changes according to your wishes to go any direction at the intersection. Wanna go left then start by sticking to the left. Do not cut right across infront of everybode else.
9. Remember you're representing cyclists. If you spot any motorist including 'e-bike' forget all of the above, give chase and overtake.

I don't know, occasionally cars are fun. I love the smug feeling of cruising past a big line of traffic, or getting in just the right spot for a cheeky draft. The worst thing is the noise honestly, when lots of cars are passing at high speed they drown out my music

i wouldnt stay in the bike lane here as cars going straight or left would cut me off or trap me or just run me over
id go to the far right of the right turning car lane where im out of the way of those cars and visible to the ones turning right
i thankfully dont encounter these hellish contraptions often in england though
roundabouts are their own problem but much safer to navigate

In your picture, the bike lane stops in front of the two car lanes, therefore:
If your lights are currently red:
>ride to the front of your lane
>position yourself in front of the right turning car lane
>indicate that you indeed wanna turn right to cars behind you
>when your light turns green, proceed towards the right turns bike lane
>if you do a wide turn, cars can safely pass you on the inside, as your new bike lane is the outermost

If your lights are currently green:
>Look if there is a WIDE gap that would let you cross from the bike lane to the right turning lane
>CLEARLY indicate that you want to turn right to all cars behind you
>If the distance to the next car permits it.or the cars behind you slow down to let you in, drive in the middle of the turning lane and proceed to turn over the intersection normally

The most important thing is to clearly communicate what you are about to do.

it really just depends on the traffic volume, or cars per hour
if this is a high-capacity downtown road where theres cars getting backed up and cut off at red lights, then just use pedestrian signals
but if only one of the two intersected roads is high capacity and the other is an enclave of a kind.
then just cross the lower traffic-volume street on the road,
and the high traffic-volume street on the sidewalk

Get in the car lane that's going the way you want to go, make it through the intersection, duck back out into the next bike lane if there is one or stay in thr car lane if you're fast/metal enough. Bike lanrs are a death trap and this is a beautiful example of why, never fear foregoing them entirely when you need to
