So I went to the local bike shop for a new wheel and the vape spewing snob there told me 26 inch wheels are obsolete and only used for cheap "junior" bicycles. Apparently adults now ride 29 inch wheels, is this true? I've been riding 26 inch wheels my entire adult life, I'd need a ladder to mount a bicycle with 29 inch wheels. Now I am curious to understand in a simple way what exactly it is that makes 26 inch woefully outdated?

26 are used on jump bikes, retro MTB and go through kind of a revival on enduros and downhill bikes.
Taller wheels are more stable.

29er will roll better and should be the choice for MTB. But they must be more expensive to be the same quality - more material, tighter tolerances etc. Otherwise you're trading light, stiff 26 wheel for Chinesium and wheel quality is very important.

There are also 27.5er for shorter riders and more nimble flicking.
No quality, purpose built MTB will be 26er. It's either for different use - e.g. some touring bikes offer 26 for better load bearing and easier repair in third world countries. Some commuters can be 26 for easier storage in small apartment.
But yes,general purpose MTBish 26er will probably be trash gathered from cheapest possible components. OTOH that doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to build or buy quality 26 wheel for your niche application. It just means that LBS is just another mainstream bike outlet.

Nothing but marketing and trends. There's space in this world for BMXes and minivelos with 20in wheels. Road moved from 27 to the SMALLER 700c.

It's particularly an advantage for manlets and women sizes.

Beach cruisers are probably not going to leave that size anytime soon.

I have clipped a lamppost with my handlebar. The fall resulting fall was sideways, not over the front wheel.
My handlebar isn't even that wide, I was tired and distracted.

Ironically the only bar I have impacted a tree was a 695mm bar.
Pretty sure I went off trail and I dodged the fork but hit the tree with a solid thunk.

My wider bars(780) can get close but I just slow down a little. I find them superior for descents and jumping. Worse for climbing and xc. I look at it as an experiment. I can always go back to my old setup or use the bar+stem on another bike

Yes, the ERD is 630mm compared to 622mm for 700c. I don't know enough about the history of the two rim diameters to give you a detailed explanation of the who, what, where, and why, but in my experience 27" wheels were typically found on more casual road bikes and touring bikes, while 700c wheels were provided with more racing oriented bicycles. 27" wheels more or less disappeared in the mid-late 80s, but enough tire manufacturers make decent enough tires for them to not be 100% obsolete. There's no reason to build a 27" wheel nowadays though unless you have an old touring frame with cantilever posts in a weird position.

26 was born out of wheel strength.
28 was light, weak road thing, 26 was stronger just by size and also due to utility uses. with strong 28 wheels coming to market, there's no point in 26 except cost savings ( less material, same strength with simpler construction ).

But remember you need lighter 29er wheel for same agility as 26er, because the rotational mass has bigger leverage. So again - cost, but they will objectively roll better.

Most likely. 90s MTBs were basically rigged from other parts, even motorcycle tyres. A purpose built tyre will work better. But you gotta define better too. Being built on top of utility bikes made them more durable. Modern bikes require more maintenance. That light, soft grippy thing rubber tyre wont last 10 years either.

I went to Walmart to get a 26 in tire yesterday. Had to wait 10 minutes for someone to unlock them. This lead me to rediscover Target. Their prices were better and stuff wasn't locked. I think I was just trained to think Walmart was the best price in town.

26er's caused many over the bar face plants and back flops in my racing days crabbing on rocks and ruts and sidewalk cracks etc. Never was actually "between the wheels" until 29er's developed. 26ers are great for people that never go fast over rough stuff, never go fast anywhere but downhill with long suspension travel, or road really fast to the local market or whatever and impressed themselves. commuters that are happy with just getting there cheap is good enough or people woefully short and need a ladder to mount a bike like 26ers
