Motorcycles are inherently more dangerous than other modes of transport, but those risks are mitigated by healthy attitudes towards risk. In Australia, around 80% of fatal motorcycle incidents are single vehicle incidents involving an excess of speed. If one follows road rules, maintains constant vigilance and shies away from unnecessary risk motorcycles can be a perfectly acceptably safe method of transportation, at least for me. It's also far more convenient than using a car if you live in or near a city, as filtering means you almost never get stuck at traffic lights behind a line of slow to start Sunday drivers.
I would not however ever recommend a motorcycle to someone without experience driving a car.
