Speaking as a cyclist that wanker deserved to go under the wheels. It's cunts like that that give the rest of us a bad name. There are times where you need to assert yourself as a cyclist, and there are times when you need to know your place. In busy traffic you have to allow enough space for traffic to safely pass, if only for your own sake.

1.5m passing distance is more geared towards cyclists mixing with traffic that has a much higher speed differential because they're doing a big ride or whatever.

In here cyclist would be 100% at fault. Passing distance laws are for riding in traffic. On roads with marked bike lanes everyone just stays in their lane and is not allowed to cross continuous lines. Besides if the traffic or weather is so bad you can't safely co-exist, cyclist must use sidewalk while yielding to pedestrians.

The video you mentioned is straight up manslaughter by the bus driver, who did jail time.
The cyclist was practically licking the curb (to be "curteous" to other road users) and the bus driver took that as an invitation to squeeze the bus between him and the oncoming traffic.

Safety comes first, sometimes that means taking the lane sometimes it means waiting out a dangerous situation, stationary, by the curb if you don't have the speed to ride with traffic.

The cyclist was very VERY near the curb.
The bus driver squeezed him in despite the oncoming traffic.
It's really is not a far fetch to say that the bus driver woudn't have done that had the cyclist been properly positioned on the road.
Therefore, the bus driver squezed him in BECAUSE he was so close to the curb.
Whether the cyclist did it to be courteous, thought it was safer, or for any other reason, literally doesn't matter.

I do ride and know the difference. I have seen both.
If I arrive at a stop sign 2 seconds before a car and there's a steep incline straight ahead, I don't "take the lane" and make the car wait 5 minutes for me to slowly work my way up the hill because technically I'm in the right. I wait another 2 seconds for the car to pass then have the road all to myself. I'll take the lane and if another car shows up and I have no other option, but I don't fuck over cars just because the rules say I can.
And yes I have seen this happen, all the time. I've also jumped red lights ahead of cars, when I knew I was going to make it to the next light first anyway and in this case it's far safer for me and no is inconvenienced.

Its a law here that you have to keep 1,5m distance to the cyclist while overtaking in the city. Even 2m outside the city.
One double yellow like the americans call it and youre screwed. I once had to drive behind a cyclist for over 15mins at 15km/h because i couldnt legally overtake. I dont care to much because 50% of the time im the cyclist on roads like that. Cagers are literally seething but i have a insta 360 on my seatpost and always tap on it if they start honking.

I commute on a lonely rural road and can hear cars coming a mile away unless im going fast or its windy
I mostly take up the whole lane and weave and wobble around carefree unless theres a car behind me, then i gtfo of the way
Ive literally never had a bad experience or confrontation doing this way even when once in a while i dont hear the car behind me and take a second to move over
I really dont understand people who want to take over the whole road and never let the cars go by

Yes. You have to think about your own safety and capabilities as well the other people on the road and make decisions on the fly. Prefer following laws you can't just blindly follow them until you get pancaked by a careless driver and are too dead to plead your case.
And you know something else, somehow cops never ticketed me, ever. I knew exactly which intersections were safe to jump reds and when. In fact, the last year before I left, they'd installed some special bike stoplights for signaling bikers to do exactly what I had been doing. Meanwhile, cops were still very active ticketing bikers at the more dangerous and problematic intersections.

I do it when
- I don't trust the biker not to do something unpredictable.
- I don't have sufficiently good visibility of the oncoming traffic lane.
- We're too close to an intersection or some other potential source of chaos and I'd rather take it slow and steady.
