Road biking is more relaxing experience, where you zone out, but going on a rough trail or an airline is more raw fun because you have to concentrate at every stone, every second.
Also the skill progression on MTB is amazing. When I started, I went to a red trail, and had to dismount and walk down on foot. I went back to the same exact trail, and smashed it, scratching my head "huh, did they reworked this line or what?". At my local dirt jumps, I was thinking that people who build it were insane, but year later it "clicked" with me and I cleared my first table, and this year I've been doing bigger jumps and drops. It's like I'm doing completely different sport.
When it comes to road biking, you're only improving your fitness, and go for a longer rides. Good thing that some mountains here have tarmac roads way up to their peaks, so I can still have some reasonable challenges besides "go for a longer ride than last year".
