Downsides are shitty roads - expect to push your bike across certain passes, and to be rattled by washboard for hours on end - and the few good roads are invariably busier than you'd like. Heat can be brutal, resupplies can be limited or absent. Weather can do just about anything at altitude, even in summer.
Bottom line, if you don't mind some discomfort and like your biking more adventurous it's top tier. It's becoming low-key popular with cyclists.
