26 wheels is obsolete is often heard on bicycle chats. But is it true? In China, 26 is the dominant wheel size. And where China leads, the west follows. America has no culture of future of their own. You see it now, all the public hire bikes in the west are 26 because they are made in China.

26" rim choice is rather limited. The only XC aluminium disc brake rim with various decent width and spoke count choices is Sunringle Helix.
As for rim brake rims, the only choices are 32h and 36h, despite 28h and 24h being perfectly fine for lighter people, especially considering that smaller rims are stronger than bigger rims. Width choice is limited to 19i and 17i, making wider tires useless with rim brakes.
Now I'm spending an extra $250 on new wheels and new hydraulic brakes for my small bro to make his bike competitive in races, when it could have been just a set of rim brake wheels instead.
Oh well, now a carbon fork is an option to drop the weight even further.

Im 165cm tall, a 53 frame still fits me and thats for a road bike. Smaller mtb frames are even more common. If you need a road bike, honestly a mtb would be preferable, you can just get a womans bike they dont even look different wtf

mtx line, particularly the mtx 39 for stout wheels. Spank makes rims too, and I think DT swiss still has one.
Of course there is chinese weinmann(bought out the name long time ago) and alex rims for sale.
Regretfully mavic deemax's are long gone

If you want lighter rims/wheels just look used for a nice set of wheels. As companies force/only make new product the older tech is only JUST supported. So we can generally find lower level, or mid tier, but high tier has left.

Old hubs are heavy and shitty compared to new chinese dtswiss clones.
Weinmann is total garbage.
No dtswiss rims in my part of the globe.
CR18 has good weight and width but again no options with <32h.
I'd go for carbon rims, but I'm not rich enough yet to give my bro such expensive gifts

I run 2.25(measured) tires on mavic narrow rims works fine tubeless

lmao I have dtswiss 26in wheels with 240's. They are fine but not appreciably better then my xt hubs or american classic hubs.

That's probably because your XT rear hub hasn't destroyed itself like mine did.
Mavic mtb hubs also have a weak spot with the piece of plastic instead of a real bearing in the freehub.
On dtswiss and clones you can break the ratchet, but replacing it is fast and easy. That also changes the number of engagement points.
Wide tires on narrow rims don't work well.

Yes, both my 2 pairs of rear and front xt's are doing fine. Did 3 seasons of racing on both(dad and me raced) and training while being slow at 200lbs. Admittedly mine are older m756 era.

Sure ratchet hubs might be better, I haven't broken enough freehubs yet to care

Honestly I haven't measured my rim widths(internal) to know what's up. I have externally measured and run 2.2in tires on a 25mm(external) width rim, and it's fine.
Run 2.25 on 24mm externals.
Run 2.5's on 29mm external and 25mm internal

No, I can't be bothered to pull the tire on my rims to check and then reseat tubeless. I might ride softer, or slower then you so I can't tell. I do run higher pressures then most now. Usually 25+.
Don't like banging my rims on rocks.

irl i still see 26 inch mtbs EVERYWHERE
theres 700cs around and the odd 650/27.5
ive never seen anyone but myself on 29inch mtb wheels
i didnt like them anyway so im on 27.5 now but desu these are too big for me too so im going back to good ol 26 when i change again

Where I live 29 are almost as common than 26. I guess that's because 26 are also on the bikes people use recreationally for the most part. Commuters are mainly elderly people with city bikes on 28 inch wheels.

I have both 26 and 29 inch MTBs and I greatly prefer the latter because the wheels have greater inertia, I can ignore holes way more often and the bike itself has far more predictable and less twitchy handling which is nice in winter on ice and snow. Though I have to say there's likely a bias due to frame sizes also being different. And the more boatlike steering at first was surely odd for the larger and newer bike, but I don't have such an impression anymore- probably not only because of being used to it but also in part due to my riding technique being different now.
