I'm a decade late but what the fuck happened to front derailleurs
two separate mechanisms for high and low
a fucking pressure bolt that just pushes against the frame
tension screw adjustment (is this not basically a barrel adjuster)
coming from claris btw

I don't know my friend that's for the shop boys to figure out. I just press the little paddle thingies on the left handlebar. Bottom button at the top of the hill and top button when you get part way up the next hill and your bike isn't going as fast anymore. Don't tell me you get your fingers all greasy with that stuff down there?

Anyway next time I drop off my C68 at the shop for spring tune up I'll try to remember to ask one of the boys. Anything to stay away from the wife longer haha! What a harpy! Anyway semper fi and regards,

While you were away, Shimano introduced long arm front derailers that were better at shifting under load. They were better at shifting under load, but they're fiddly to set up, cut into tire clearance on bikes with short chainstays or larger tires, and were very sensitive to how smooth the cable moved. The toggle pivot design is still fiddly to set up (and has a learning curve because it doesn't work like any other derailer) but does solve the tire clearance problem and stays in adjustment better too.

Setting it up is annoying with the strange "make the two little white lines align" system but once it's installed 105 front shifting is significantly easier than claris (though claris isn't bad). The little extra screw that touches the frame keeps it from twisting and is on claris too. Just keep it clean and maybe squirt some oil on the pivots so it doesn't rust or whatever and that's all you ever have to worry about.

The most annoying part is the little plastic cap that holds down the cable end gets lost easily and without it the cable end will hit the pedal arm if you don't bend it or cut it short, but if that happens you can get a new one for $3.

I accidentally forced myself into using 1x on my mountain bike by buying the wrong crankset and I found it improved my performance in xc races. Less things to think about after an hour of the race = fewer mistakes like trying to shift the wrong derailleur or upshifting instead of downshifting.
2x is better for road cycling and 3x is better for touring and "trekking" or whatever it's called. Won't be switching any of my other bikes to 1x unless I have to.

I probably need my shifters, brakes alligned and serviced like 3x a year(dura ace from 2016). Ride around like 5k km a year. Absolutely dont have any idea how to set this shit up and my local lbs dude does it for me in like 10mins.
Always give him a nice tip and we talk about bikes and stuff for a bit. Nice atmosphere too. Its cool to just wait for a few minutes and watch how the pros do it while sipping a nice coffee (or cold beer on the warmer days!)
Why should i learn to do this greasy shitty work on my own? To save some change?
Nah thank you im a cyclist and not some weird hippie bike mechanic.

front derailleur wer already too sensible at different setup. nowadays frames are designed to accommodate an even greater variety of tires, cassette, chains, cogs and so on, so manufacturers had to make fron derailleurs more capable of shifting under different setup and so they are now more complicated.

ive had this issue with my front deraillieur it was buzzing my nobs when i put on some 2.35s
i had to angle the deraillieur slightely which made the shifting uuuhh... sub optimal
ive been looking for a new fd anyway
what ones wont have this issue?
gotta be a clamp style duel pull and would work for a 22-32 2x
something like that but a tripple for a 22-32-42 would work too
ive been looking at basic atlus ones and stuff and they seem to suit all my needs except im still not sure about the tyre clerance

less parts doesnt necissarrily equal less complication
i found my 1x to be so annoying and finnicky i converted it to a 2x
for transportation fds are greatbecause they allow you to get the same kind of gear range or vastle more for cheaper and with less issues that will arise under the use of someone riding for transport
plus you underestimate how much less efficient a 1x is
it has to be a nice one set up perfectly or the drag especially in 1st gear is feelable
even when my 2x and 3x are caked in mud and unlubed they run smoothely
plus its physically impossible for my chain to drop
im telling you chain drops on a 1x can be fucking scary and im not spending silly money on an inferior derailleur just to get a clutch

It's funny you should say this, my XC bike absolutely ate chains while it was still a 2x9, I would barely get 900 miles out of them before they hit 100% wear, and I would then need a new cassette too. After converting it to 1x9 when the chainwheels got so worn the whole drivetrain just started binding up under load (chain suck, google it) I have got around 3000 out of the original chain I put on there, it's not even at 50% wear yet.

My canyon bike came with the front derauiler not adjusted correctly, I downloaded the dealers manual and followed it step by step, now it's perfect without any rubbing, you can do most maintenance on your own bike if you are willing to watch youtube and read. It's not like a car where you need a dedicated space and tons of experience.

I am guessing something wasn't setup right.
I ran shimano xtr rear derailleur, xt front, xt shifters and probably an xt chain or slx. Not sure.

A flat area is all you need and the same can be said for watching youtubes as long as you arent, say, rebuilding the whole engine. Most maintenance tasks are straight forward and mechanically simple, its just access that can be a chore

Indexed front shifting was a moronic mistake. I dunno if Campagnolo has some wide-scoped patent on their ratcheting friction shift mechanism, but it's the best solution for integrated shifters

It's a big enough problem that a certain company couldn't figure it out and forced the 1x meme, while another's implementation was finicky at best and requires frequent adjustment. Meanwhile, leaving it friction means you just adjust the limit screws once and forget about it until the derailleur shits the bed for no reason and can't hold the upper limit

it's not a conspiracy. The goal of these companies is to sell product, and if they can convince the consumer that 1x is the best and they can keep milking the "just one more gear, bro" thing they will. The funniest thing to me is I have sram twist shifters. They work great and allow trim+fast shifts like on a friction shifter, but with clicks like indexing.
