you need at least three gear settings for flat, uphill, and downhill. additional settings beyond that create a higher degree of granularity for the various grades of slope you may encounter. this will begin to make sense once you actually start riding, have fun out there champ

Many of them are retarded and can't figure out how to set up derailleurs and brakes.
If I were to commute by bike I'd consider getting a fixie because they need less maintenance and I can't justify buying a belt drive bike when it can get stolen at any time. Fortunately I live right next to a metro station so I just walk there

i dont think its so much they lack the technical knowledge to set up gears and brakes though doing a fixie or singlespeed conversion is surprisingly finnicky
although i guess its a 1 time thing since then all you ever need to do is lube the chain and change tyres

Mostly this. I live in fucking Hillvalley and to haul any cargo without sweating like a bitch i love my 22T-36. For the flat im ok with the 36T-11 i have too. A single speed would be retarded here, we even have streets with escalators and lifts etc.

Pretty much. Aside from a road bike I've been riding a fixie with a front brake for commuting and errands since 2016. Maintaining it has been piss easy, plus it's fun and gives you a bit more leg gains than a SS.
I volunteered in a college cycling group mostly fixing bikes and teaching bike maintenance. It's so fucking tragic seeing so many people get a 3x9 hardtail for commuting and "oh maybe spinning it around a local trail" (they never do), only for the drivetrain to completely crap out after a rainy month out on the hall bike parking. Most of them just throw it away or practically let it get stolen after a year or two, only to repeat the mistake.

hello my brother in gears, i love my 22-36 too. that 60% is just the sweetest spot. comfortably climb 18% gradient uphills witha loaded bike. if i ever switch to a 2x i will have a 30-51.
