Kind of makes a big error by saying a bunch of countries have trains that go 450 km/h. No train in revenue serivce now does that speed. And it lumps in the USA as a country that has high speed trains when it kind of doesn't.

If you know the first thing about economics, which I suspect you dont, is looking at a map of Canada and regional wealth. Almost all cucknadian provinces are strictly poorer than the poorest US states, except Alberta which has some semblance of US-level wealth. The only economically viable corridor then is Edmonton to Calgary, because there is enough economic activity to support it.

Unless of course you're not interested in rational provision of public goods and just want government pork. In that case whatever is the most wasteful and least useful thing will be built for the most amount of money possible all handed out to contractors based in Quebec who know some crooked politician.

i mean, yeah? you could argue that, with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, this is the exact scenario that CAHSR should have gone with from the beginning - start simple, get your basics right so you get something that works, tweak it where it's needed, build on what works. which, given that train networks don't just appear as if by magic, i guarantee you will be what these unnamed European and Asian countries will have done from the beginning.

it's a start. it's a beginning. getting all persnickety while getting out the dictionary to define HSR and who has HSR and why, may result in engagement metrics for your youtube channel, but doesn't help produce a train network that people can be proud of.

the point is, as mentioned in the linked article, everybody inbetween Quebec and Toronto wants in on this public transportation thing as well - as they should! - which makes a TGV-like service, where fast inter-city trains are segregated from all-stations traffic, impossible. or at least, impossible without more land take, more complexity, more disruption, yadda yadda you know how it goes. which is why, rather than try and make 2+2 equal 5, 'high frequency' is a sensible compromise.

germany is an extreme case but in most cases (e.g. france) hsr runs into and shares conventional terminals and runs onto conventional lines at the end of dedicated hsr lines
japan only has a segregated hsr network because they had to, and even then the mini shinkansen exist

Why are Albertans always the most delusional posters? You guys send your oil to the US at massive discounts and have to beg BC to pump your shit oil to the port market. You're resource welfare queens masquerading as the taxpaying base of Canada, meanwhile Ontario and Quebec have Shale reserves, vast Canadian Shield mineral riches, major ports and better access to the US market, and much larger, more important major cities.

Not only that but oils sands produces some of the lowest grade oil on the market and the effort needed to mine, ship and refine it is greater than the energy you get out of it.
Without subsidies to the major oil and gas companies (paid for by every Canadian citizen in every Province and Territory), the oil sands wouldn't be economically viable.

Comparative to other fuel blends, it’s absolutely not price competitive.
When oil falls, Alberta’s oil becomes worthless and less lucrative compared to shale or Venezuelan heavy. If oil goes below $60, Alberta instantly turns into a have-not province and relies on Ontarian and BC transfer payments to balance it’s budget.
