What are we calling severe damage? Was there damage sustained to the pressure hull like Japan Air 123, or just a scrape?

The damage doesnt look bad but i guess it depends on how much stress was transferred into the tails frame. I wouldnt be surprised if they end up swapping most of the tail out, or just a few panels and braces.

it's not a particularly widespread problem, because usually if you slam the yoke back and don't climb your instincts should be to push the yoke forward until you've got more energy lol

Scraping ass of a plane is not rocket science and happens all the time. And i did fly 777. As passenger. Plane is long, so no wonder it is possible to tail strike the thing.
Not interesting. Screwless door is much more interesting.

It's supposed to, but the pilot training is to put the attitude right on the bottom of the inverted purple chevron. That guarantees you aren't exceeding the tail strike deck angle.
