Why is it such a taboo to get a practical bike in the US? Every bicyclefag I've ever met has a masochistic streak and gets angry if they sense that you don't want maximum discomfort while riding a bike.

Also it's usually a step-thru frame that you people are trying to shove down my throat, which is impossible to shoulder to take it up the stairs to my apartment. So I'd have to, I don't know, drag it up by the handlebars? Not sure what you expect. Probably you never considered that scenario, since you live in a single family home in a suburb somewhere in Idaho.

I'm assuming you're talking about those Dutch commuter bikes when you say "practical." Like the other anon said, terrain plays a role.

I am an American with barely existent bike infrastructure and I have a dedicated MTB and a hybrid montain-road bike. Sometimes I have to get off the road and onto shitty cracked sidewalks, a hard gravel shoulder, or on grass and the MTB suspension helps. And the rare occasions a bike trail actually gets a grade separated crossing here, it's a high ass bridge that has to climb up at least 20ft / 6m on each side.

I just wish more apartment buildings would take a parking spot or two in the garage or ground floor and put some secure bike storage in. Put in some cameras and key access, even better if there's a security guard or something.

The most practical bike is the 90's mtb with rack eyelets.
Ridgid, can fit large tires for dirt paths, 3x drivetrain for wide gearing.
Low top tube for vertically challenged people so you can ride almost any size and "fit" with the right stem.

We have hills here so 1 gear on a dutch bike would not work well.

In truth my current building has a bike room with cameras and stuff, but it's irrelevant, I will die on this hill. Double diamond frames are the best choice for urban cycling, as the carrying part is the structural part.

If you fucked up and know you were wrong, you can buy special straps to replace the top tube, or you could get a normal fucking bike and stop trying to larp as a dutch person.

Thats essentially the rise of mtbs to ride park trails.

The usa was ahead of the game in comfort. Theres no comparison between an Amsterdam mammachurri and a 90s 26 inch mtb. Mtb is comfier and easier to steer and correct.

I'm not american but from what I've seen and heard, please correct me if I'm wrong, If you're getting a "practical" bike in the US you're probably going at a leisurely 10-15 mph I.E. ***you're not keeping up with city traffic and are instead activelly present to cagefats who now have to overtake you instead of being a good little cyclist by making yourself scarce*** which might be the actual taboo here.

Not in gridlock.
Another thing I want to bring up beofre it gets obvious later is that for most dense urban areas the actual average speed in morning and afternoon hours is probably going to be 20 mph or less regardless of how fast drivers are going inbetween bumber crawls and stops, so it's kind of bizzare to me that it's culturally expected for cyclists to keep up with that instead of going at a consistent speed separated from all that bullshit.

I live in a semi-rural gated country club community, I ride my bike to the bar and back and generally work from home. I can leave my bike wherever I want, but it’s mostly old white people with a handful of younger shire families living here. When white flight occurs, I’ll move to a more remote gated community and do the same thing. When the need arises, I drive into the city and carry a firearm.

the Townie is a semi-recument design that allows you to keep your feet flat on the ground at a stop. it is superior to the Dutch bike for both safety, comfort, and ergonomics.

it's true that many men try to compensate for masculinity issue they have via loud intrasexual competitive actions. these are a minority of cyclists but the biggest $ consumers of cycling gear per $ so they have an outsized voice that the cycling companies encourage. but never forget that the Townie is King. My bike is stressed enough being parked outside at work 2000 hours a year, I wanna avoid stressing it four times as much by also parking it outside the rest of the time, not to mention theft risk, and the only interior storage space I have is the basement down a steep flight of stairs, not to mention my town being hilly and having public stairs I might want to carry my bike up and down. I don't know what you mean by "a casual page bike path" but I've spent most of my life living in one of various "top 5" bike cities in the US and that is not the case, at all.

But when you say "bike path" what I'm picturing is something like the city-planned bike corridors that alternate between something resembling a MUP, and something resembling a PBL, and sometimes just a green painted lane on a main arterial road. The things you see on the "bike map of the city" that cities put out when they want to look hip and european. Not purely recreational spots. I can easily imagine something like the Atlantic City boardwalk or the Venice Beach boardwalk being nothing but beach cruisers
