Also, Japan is generally shit at marketing their products abroad and tend to do their own thing, different from foreign standards.
Just look at exports of Shinkansen vs French TGV or German ICE for example.
Even though the Shinkansen has carried far more, never had deadly accidents etc, they still only really exported the tech to Taiwan (and Kawasaki Heavy sold some trains to China, who then promptly stole all the tech to build indigenous trains)
Compared to France and Germany who have exported their tech to many countries
