as some of you may have heard, the intuitive machines IM-1 mission successfully landed on the moon

..however it turns out it snagged a rock and now it's sideways on the moon (but still functioning!)

hopefully we can get some more pics out of it!

They should've put more energy into qualitive performance rather than loading it up with junk like art work, 125 miniature sculptures, and lunar library. :-/

I know I'm supposed to think the commercialization of space is "deck" or "bussin" or whatever millennials like to say these days but it seems HIGHLY dystopian to me, must be a generation thing. Like how zoomers think the solution to everything is to privatize profit and socialize risk and delete all the laws that apply to corporations while enacting new laws to fuck over individuals

But I feel like also pointing out that the cold war was largely the world being terrified about the militarization of space and the potential for orbital nukes deleting cities with maybe 30 seconds warning.
We were comfy with NASA because it was "our team," but are we really happy with Iran and North Korea having space programs? Should we be?
Maybe the privatization of space flight is a good work around to the militarization of space flight? Maybe it's a good thing if small countries can buy space on private rockets, rather than building state-run space programs with state-run objectives?
But also, fuck capitalism. Shit's complicated.

These national programs are super slow. But it's not really that black and white anyway, this mission was still for Artemis, it's just a private contractor building the lander for NASA. Kinda like you'd have train companies building trains for a national railway. I don't think there are giga corporations large enough to run their own space programs yet. Then again I'm probably biased, I don't think private space stuff is very different from private companies having ships or oil rigs at sea. There's still some sort of laws they need to follow, it's not a total wild west cowboy situation

That only made it more top-heavy. Just a slight nudge from minimal horizontal movement was enough to tip it over. Lower gravity also adds to the risk of bouncing.

The main issue seems to be that these autonomous things aren't good at dodging obstacles, compared to how Armstrong looked at the landing zone and noped the hell away from the giant boulders. Instead it just goes like well I guess this is where I'm supposed to land, and then it hits whatever it hits. Would be funny if the Starship lander had the same issue, a giant dumb silo just tips over because it hit a rock lol

That too. They say the software is supposed to analyze the surface and decide where to land but that doesn't seem to be working for them yet. During the descent one of the laser systems stopped working so only one could be used.

They forgot a wire in the hardware to override the laser altimeter protection circuit. Their test equipment had this wire so they didn't realize it pre launch. Then they patched the software to use the laser on one of the scientific instruments but made another mistake and that data was not used. So they landed only with the data from the camera and the inertial measurement unit and that resulted in a hard landing. The landing leg broke and it tipped over.
