In case of hobbies like cycling if that nicer bike or any other equipment gets the lawyer/doctor/dentist/software engineer outside and exercising it's a good thing. And if you're earning +$100 k a year buying nice hobby equipment once in a while isn't really a big deal.
Also I'd wager being at 5 W/kg FTP I'm in the top 0.1% of bike riders in the world.
